I am just disassembling this for the first time and see that while the forestock matches the serial numbers last three digits the butt and butt plate do not. Probably as simple as someone switching these for some reason...but, both butt and plate have the number "109" while the butt has an additional large "44" with a five spoked asterisk stamped over the 44. Forewood has the "843" stamped into the end as well as a "39". Can anyone shed some light on what these numbers represent? Tks. Dave

Maybe assembly #'s.

When it comes to choosing friends....I'm at an age where I'd rather have 4 quarters than 100 pennies.

Probably parts numbers...The B was made from 1929 to 1935 so the 39 and 44 are probably not year numbers or if they are then they are probably from a later rifle or an earlier A..

Is your rifle a takedown? The B is the same rifle as the A except the B is a takedown.

I don't know if this helps, but its a start in your investigation.

Dante, I've seen old 1899's with factory replaced stocks that had numbers stamped on them. No way to letter it probably, but if it's a Savage buttplate with a number matching the buttstock I think that's what it would be.

Normally the serial numbers would be stamped on buttplate, buttstock and forearm.
