Hello All,
I am looking at a Savage 99 Takedown in 30-30 and it has been fully engraved. The engraving is very deep and is not factory. I havn't seen another like it and would like to get some advice on what it is worth. I know it is hard without pictures but I will try to descibe it the best I can. The owner knows nothing about the rifles history and never fired it. It is in 98% condition and the engraving is amazing. Three game scenes on the reciever and the lever is engraved with scroll and someones initials. Peep sights on the tang and nice wood with cheek piece. I have only seen engraving like this on high end German rifles. Also the bolt is jeweled. Can anyone give me a ball park price for such a rifle?
Thanks Dave

It is not 98% if it has non-factory engraving

Dave, Welcome to the forum. Might be some interest from the collector fraternity if it's a Griffen and Howe rifle. Any pictures? Any history? Serial number?

The rifle had no visible numbers or writing on the outside...Just engraved scenes. I didn't take it apart. Also the owner has no history of the rifle. My 98% rating was on overall condition not 98% original. Thanks

Dave, it's going to be tough to give a value. The big $$ are for factory engraved, and the non-factory varies everywhere depending on who gets interested.

Yes, it does since it's not factory engraved. Someone probably spent a lot of money to have it done but there's nothing special about it in the open market.
Again, pictures would help get to some kind of WAG on value.

I have seen Griffin And Howe engraved Savages and I would say this rifle is very close if not as good.

I don't think $1800 is too high if you like it...it would cost a bunch more than that to pay an engraver to do something similar.
For reference: There was a 99F in 243 or 250 that sold on GB a while back that was fully engraved (not game scense though) and it sold for $1500.

EcoDave (got to wonder about the name ) Are you investing or buying what you want and like? If your investing then this is only one of the places to investigate. You got a lot of work ahead of you and probably a short time to do it since I would imagine the seller has already decided he wants it to go away and first $1800 or what ever gets it. If you like it then...enough said!

For that money i'd own it!! if the engraving is nicely done, some people collect custom ,engraved rifles regardless of make. I saw a 99R griffin& Howe completely engraved by Joseph Fugger sell for $12,000 6 years ago. Don

Yep, but Don, there's also the folks who come on here and talk about how beautifully engraved the PE and DE rifles are. Or the custom engravings that have flowers carved into the receiver, or <etc>. With no pics and no idea who did it and what style it is...
For a great engraving job he's not going to lose his shirt for $1800, and might make some if he's looking to flip it. So, if he likes it, buy it. But it might end up being anywhere from a $1,000 gun to a $10,000 gun.

Be easier if we knew the serial number, then match it against the G&H numbers......hello?

Isn't it against the law to obliterate a serial number? Even if handsomely done with engraving? If so, would that be an ownership issue?

Don't seem like G&H would eliminate a serial number. I would like to sit-in on the Tue debate...I've yet to see work that rival's Tue's.(savage pun there mebee) I suppose some would argue the Ulrich Bro's were good...compared to Tue...it looks like Ulrich's did their work with a sulky plow and horse.
