I just bought a nice 270 Winchester Model 70 in 270 win and it has a Nikon Monarch UCC 3-9x40 on it. All of my other rifles have Leupold VXlll on them. I was thinking about replacing the Nikon with a VXlll.

Do you think the Nikon is a good scope and I shouldn't waste my money or should I replace it?

I would think the Monarch is comparable to or slightly better than the Leupold optically. It has less eye relief than the big L will have at lower magnification anyway. If you think the Monarch eye relief is adequate I wouldn't waste my money. The Monarch is a very good scope.

Thanks elsdude, When I dial it up to 9 x and put the gun to my shoulder I need to move my cheek up closer to the scope to get full view through the scope. This bothers me. The scope is as far back as it goes.

I have several Leupold Vari-X II's and III's, I also have three Monarch UCC's.

In my honest opinion it would be a complete waste of time and money taking the scope off to replace it with a Leupold VXIII. The Monarch isjust as good as a VX III optically and in ruggedness. The only thing the VXIII has is a little more eye relief. But the eye relief on the Nikon is more than adequate.

"Eye Relief"

Is that why I have to inch up a bit on the stock at 9x to get a full view because of the eye relief? I don't have to do this on any of my Leupolds

I have a couple Leupolds and other brands that I have to do the same thing, doesn't really bother me because if I'm shooting something so far away I need 9X I usually have plenty of time to get into position as needed or I'm punching paper. I worry more about a scope's relief between 3x and 6x which is where mine usually get fired from anyway.

By the way,

That Nikon is a nice scope. I havnt noticed any issues with eye relief on mine. pretty much between goona boil down to personal preferance IMO.

On the plus side the Nikon has turrets.

The only real difference would be not only in the eye relief but the size of the eye box. That's the head position leeway you have, particularly at the lower magnifications, with the Leupold.
The other issue is the ability to get the scope positioned right on the rifle. If it's OK for you with the scope set on the mid to lower magnifications, I don't see where it would be worth it to get another Leupold. E

I have a Monarch UCC in 3-9x40, and I think it is a fine, bright, lightweight, good scope! I wouldn't replace it, and I'm not getting rid of mine.

And I'm a Leupold dealer.

Keep the Monarch, and buy us all a beer. wink

Thanks everyone, I will leave it on. I just didn't like the fact that I had to move up on the stock at high magnifcatioon to get the full view in the scope but at long distance shots I will have more time to get ready so probably won't matter much.

Got a pair of Nikon Monarch 2x7s and I think the world of them. Got some Leupolds, too. After some reflective thought, I'd compare a a Nikon Monarch to a Vari X II and call it even. The difference is between a 25 year warranty and a lifetime guarantee.

The 2x7 Monarch's better scope than my Leupie 2x7 VX I, but it doesn't honestly compare to a 2.5x8 VX III. smile

Hello,

do you think a Nikon Monarch UCC 2-7x32 would be a better choice than VX-II 2-7x33 ?

It depends. You are stuck with the reticle in the Monarch but not the Leupold. Other than that I'd rate the Monarch equal to a VariX-III and a little better than the VX-2. That's to my eye. My son has a Monarch 3x9 and likes it as much as his Leupold VariX-III 2.5x8. I have a Monarch 2x7 and like it as well as a Leupold. I would like a bit heavier reticle but that's my preference.
