What is the correct gas check for the large 45 calibers? I use Hornady gas checks on my .452s and they seat and crimp nice and tight on the base. They measure around .4605" in diameter before application so they would be squeezed a bit if run through a .458 or .459 die but I wonder if that is enough to hold them. Additionally, are gas check bullet molds from the major makers, Lyman, RCBS and others, cut to take this same gas check. If not Hornady, who?

An additional question regarding gas checks; is there another gas check for the 41 Mag besides the thin one which Lyman sells (which doesn't crimp on)?

How heavy into casting? Well, certainly not so heavy that the fumes could be the cause of any added weight I've gained over the past 20 years. I do enjoy the fact that I can shoot more cheaper with cast bullets so, in a nutshell, I'm cheap. I am a bit interested, however, in the possibility of adding another bullet to the single cast option I currently use in my 45-70s. The one I have is a round nose which works fine in terms of terminal performance when cast soft. Velocity is a limiting factor however. Cast harder it seems to be easier to shoot faster but the nose shape means it zips through. I believe a flat nose bullet may be more practical for potential use where more damage is wanted. So, I'm considering either the Lyman 457643, a 400 grain plain base flat nose bullet with a nice crimping groove, or the RCBS 405 gas check design. I'm a bit unsure whether I need a gas check, in the first place, and, if I do, whether the ones I normally use will work on the RCBS bullet. They work so well on the .452 bullets I have kind of assumed that they are intended for that diameter and not the 6 thousandths larger 45-70 bullets. I hope I'm wrong. I appreciate your suggestion of using partial jackets but, like I said, I'm cheap so hopefully I can figure out a gas check that works if I actually need one at all.

Klikitarik; I think you'll find RCBS lists two 45 cal gas checks. One for the smaller pistol bullets and one for the 458-460 rifle bullets.

If you keep your velocities down around 1000-1500 you can get by with a plain base bullet using good lube. If you want to push them I would go for the gas check design mold every time. Depends on what your plans and rifle are.

Be sure to slug your bore before ordering a mold. I specify a mold that will cast two thou over groove diameter (barrel grooves not bullet grooves) . That leeway will usually work well even with changes in alloys which don't necessarily cast the same diameter as shrinkage rate varies with the alloy.

I use the Hornady 45 Cal gas checks, and they are excellent on my .460" bullets (resized to .458") for my 45-70. My buddy uses them on his .452 dia bullets as well. I quite like the Hornady GC and have no plans on changing any time soon.
