I am planning to go on a sheep hunt and was wondering how a 300 WM would be for ranges up to 400 yards?

try posting this question in the big game forum... probably get better reponses...
but, the 300 win mag is entirely capable of doing what you want to do at the range you want to do it. kick-ass cartridge.
Hunting is not a matter of life or death. It is much more important than that.

400 yards is a short trip for a 300 WM with most bullets.
From memory, using something in the 190gr class and a 200 yard zero you'll only need to comeup about 4 to 4.5 MOA or hold-over about 16inches I'd guess. (Altitude and temp won't have much effect yet at 400 yards.) Best to do an actual check before the trip with your hnting load.
Get a steady rest, relax and shoot... a "chip shot" with a good stable rest (bipod and rear support).

Yea- the 300WM is routinly used for 1k shooting matches (little more zoom than the 308 at 1k) and the general requirement is supersonic at 1k (I think thats bout 1200 fps) to stabilize. The 300 wm should have no problem at 400.

Probably could not pick a better caliber for your hunting needs. Just another opinion <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif" alt="" />

To my way of thinking, if you are going to shoot long, you need a 30 cal with the extra bullet weight so you have something when you get there. I had a 257 weatherby mag (a fine cartridge) but when looking long, that little 115 gr bullet does not have much left at 400 yards (as compared to a 180 graing 308 cal bullet). The larger bullet drifts less, carries more energy and will perform better if the shot is slightly off (which can easliy happen at 400 yards).

Understand that this comment is highly predudicial. I bought my SAKO 300 WM when I came back to the world. It cost me $195.00 ( give an idea on how long I been packin it). Used it for vaporizing jack rabbits to big game. Even a NRA 600 yd "any rifle, any sight" match. On 3rd barrel. You bet it will accurately shoot sheep at 400. Long ways past also. 180 Barnes TSX would be a dandy load. Good luck on the sheep hunt. They are my favorite. Just can't seem to Draw often enough. Semper Fi
