Just curious as to what is your favorite style McMillan stock for a Remington 700 to be used for big game hunting? Something in the 25 to 33 caliber range. I have a 340 Weatherby with a HTG stock I really like but was looking at the Remington Hunter for my next rifle. The A-5 looks good but wonder how well that would work for an all around hunting rifle? What has your experience been?

Classic, by far my favourite for a full sized Remington sporter.
Anybody who seriously concerns themselves with the adequacy of a Big 7mm for anything we hunt here short of brown bear, is a dufus. They are mostly making shidt up. Crunch! Nite-nite!

Although I have a couple of Sporters, for a hunting gun that's to be carried over hill-n-dale and everything in between, a Classic is damn tough to beat. I've got 'em from varmint 22 calibers up to a 375 Ruger.
I just couldn't figure out what all the fuss was about.... till I got the first one.

The Classic is a good one for medium weight rifles, but the Mountain Rifle handle fits me like it was made for me. It'll run a PN #2 contour with no problems, so it'll do most of what I need in a hunting rifle.
Now with even more aplomb

Mtn Rifle for me, no doubt. Don't shoot anything over .338 so it would suit my needs for 90% of my rigs.

McMillan Classic for me.... unless it's a light weight build with a slim barrel, then make it a Mtn. Rifle stock.

I like the Mt Rifle a lot...but after shooting/carrying it and the Compact, I prefer the Compact for a med/light barrel. I like the more open grip of the Compact. I'll not complain about either, they're both great.
I've not handled the Classic, but if the barrel is to heavy for either the Compact or Mt Rifle, I'd go with the Classic just based on what I've read from other users....

I much prefer the Mountain Rifle stock. If the barrel is too fat then it would be a Classic.

I love the classic. Especially for a kicker... It soaks up recoil like a sponge.

McMillan Holland Hunter. It's very similar to the Sako Hunter, but even more comfortable. I can't get a good cheek weld on the Mtn rifle or classics even with the lowest of mounts. I am not a fan of Darrels metal work or custom rifles, but his stock design is great. http://www.hollandguns.com/
Why is it called a double u, should'nt it be called a double v?

Classic is my favorite for anything bigger than a soda straw barrel, then the nod goes to the Mtn Rifle.

Someone has to stick up for the poor old BDL factory copy. I currently have two on rifles and have had two others. The Classic is good but the comb nose rises too abruptly. The BDL has a gentler and lower slope at that point, it just fits my hand like it was custom made for me. The Sporter has a weird comb fluting, it just doesn't seem to cradle the shooting hand.
I even went so far as to have McMillan inlet two Remington BDL stocks for my Winchester M70's in .30-06 and .375 H&H. Used to fire that H&H from prone a good bit so I know it handles recoil very well - for my build, my shoulder structure, my neck length, my facial structure, etc. etc. and so forth. The exact same rifle might kick the snot out of someone else.
Stock fit and preference are totally subjective.
