Just got a new .338 win Stainless hawkey. The darn thing really shoots well. See my post on it over at ask the gun writers. I borrowed a 2X7 VX2 from another rifle for the shoot , but it will be going back on the whelen I took it from. The 2X7 just fit beetween the rings , and the Eye relif ran out if I went over 5 power. I am ,at this time , leaning towrds a VX2 3X9 leupold. But I was nicly impressed with a burris FF2 3X9 by 30 mm I looked at. I am prety open minded, but I live about 20 miles from the leupold factory, so that is my favorite brand. I can't see me spending much over 400.00 and i allways use the 3X9 leupold as a comparison. There is one on my beautifull custom springfield .257 roberts. I think it will come along with me next time out for comparison purposes. They are awfully good for 300.00. ...tj3006

My .338 RCM wears an FX II 4X with German #1 reticle. I think that's plenty, and the pig I killed with it at over 200 yards would have to agree. If it could. But it's dead. My Hawkeye is very accurate too . Dennis

For your new Hawkeye, I like the 1.75-6x32 VX3, the 2.5-8x36 VX3 or the 2-8x32 Monarch. Either one is a good choice for the 338 Win.

Since you like the 3-9 Leupold VX2 why not go with that one it will be an excellent scope. I like the Burris scopes but the Leupold will have better eye relief which would be good for your 338 WM.

TJ, It's hard to beat the 3-9x40 VX-II.
I have no depth-perception so consistancy is important to me. 3-9x40 VX-IIs go on everything I have and each is set to 5x so reticle subtension range-finding is consistent on all rifles.
Recently though I've tried some other Leupolds: A VX-II 4x33 on a 30-06 Hawkeye. A VX-II 2-7x33 on a Savage 308. A VX-III 2.5-8x36 on a .375 Hawkeye.
With an unlimited supply of cash, I'd upgrade everything to the VX-3 2.5-8x36. The view through that scope is spectatcular!
But it's still hard to beat the VX-II 3-9 for the money!

I am glad to hear of all your leupols suport. I have 2 of the VX3s myself. Excelent scopes for sure. I have a Ziess conquest 2.5X8 also, and it is an extreemly good scope. I am probably going to somthing in april , and still not sure what. One thein in favor of the ziess is the tube is about an inch longer beetween the bells. The 1.75X6 leupold is also a worthy competitor, ...tj3006

since this rifle is a S.S., and as such i just assume it will be your go to rifle in bad weather. as such i myself would want my optics to be up for the same task as my rifle is. the Elites, Sightron and now Ziess (i haven't seen them yet but they did pay for the use of raingard)all offer some sort of raingard or the equivalent on their glass now. i am ignorant on what Leupold has available so if they have something as well then it's a moot point here. anyway should the weather not be cooperating i would want something i could bring up for a shot and be able to see what i wanted to shoot. it's just a thought on my part.

Twenty miles from Leupold HQ puts TJ in the wet side of Oregon...

so does Leupold offer a finish to their lens that mirrors Bushnell's and other's raingard?

Their new catalog makes no mention of RainGuard, nor does their website.

You might give a look at the SII Big Sky, 1.25 X 5 with the hunter's holdover reticle. It has plenty of eye relief and great optics.

tj3006,
Just curious what scope you settled on for that .338 Hawkeye, and how you like it?
Thanks, Ron B

tj3006.... I have several Leupolds on rifles and my .338 mag has a Vari X-3 on it right now but I got to tell you that nothing wrong with a Bushnell 3200 series rifle scope and chances are you will save money verses the Leupold.
I purchased several on sale at both Bass Pro and Cabela's and saved at least $75 dollars per scope. We took home a 3 x 9, two of the 4 x 12 and one tactical in a 5 x 15 with mil-dot.
