Ringworm, good insight. How about we suspend the right to vote for anyone who took any governmental aid in the previous 4 years? I would leave it to the states to decide on the pee test, however I tend to agree with Ringworm's assessment.

I'm not only in favor of you fail the first time you get none. I don't think anyone here would have a problem (other than the cost of testing) to deny welfare to those who test positive for drugs, but then on the other hand how does this jive with the majority here who think drugs should be legalized? I understand and agree with the point of view that says drug users should not recieve assistance, but then how could we then deny assistance for those using a legal substance? Anyone here favor this proposal, but also favor legalizing drugs? yep that'd be me for one, I don't mind what you do to your body, your biz, but when you want me to pay for it, it becomes MY biz

It might be of more societal benefit - to make sure that every lawyer, teacher, cop, fireman, Dr., pharmacist, medic, taxi driver, train engineer, highway flag-man, truck driver, pilot, soldier, sailor, heavy equipment operator etc. is not drugged too.
What's a welfare guy gonna do - hurt himself when he trips going to the bathroom?
I mean, if you think manditory testing is a good idea - test EVERYONE!
Especially those who have the most chance of harming others - if they are on drugs.

many of those occupations do get tested Brian
but not lawyers, those [bleep] are wacked with or without chemical means (you know I'm yankin chains Steve and Bob)
but I'm all for Canada not testing welfare recepients for chemical abuse, you guys could use a few more immigrants, eh? (grin)

I don't believe in mandatory testing - except perhaps for prisoners. It's the big-government intrusion thing - that sticks in my craw - where will it stop?
What perplexed me, was the stridency of the voices calling for testing of welfare people (the least likely of all people to hurt someone on the job - because they don't have a job) versus their relative silence on why - if testing is so good - they aren't advocating the manditory testing of those in society - that are most likely to hurt others while drugged.
I guess welfare people just make easier targets.

Not all attorneys, but the one on public payroll. The rest you named have one scheduled and 2 random every year as long as they are on the public payroll or deal with the public. Many private concerns also do it to save money on workers comp claims and insurance.
Interstate truck drivers are subject to random testing at weigh/check stations.
Yes Big Brother is in the states in a few forms.

I wished I knew more about what goes on up here - but I don't.
The only piss-tests I ever had to take was when I was boxing.
I am on record as wanting more police road-blocks to check for drunk drivers - so I guess I'm not totally opposed to all forms of drug checks.
What can I say - I'm a political smorgasborg. Bit of this - bit of that.

Seems if you are living under your parents roof you should live according to their rules.
If the Government is paying your bills, one should expect intrusion. That will be the rub, many folks are like teenagers, they want all the perks of being an adult without the responsibilities.
Hence the reason we shouldn't have government involved in things, but if we do and people want the government to pay their bills, provide medical etc, then they had better be ready to live by their parents rules.

This should be mandatory for anyone living on Uncle Sugar. Or anyone receiving government bailouts.

Should be mandatory in order to vote, too . . .
Someday I hope to be the person my dogs think I am . . . The only true cost of having a dog is its death. Someone once said "a nation of sheep will beget a government of wolves." Shiloh Sharps . . . there is no substitute. NRA Endowment Member

you guys are fascist . I cant belive what i am hearing from a bunch of people who think the the 2nd ammendment is a natural right? your ready to give away the Fourth Amendment because someone gets govenment money? how can you compromise... The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated.
but then have the "my cold dead hands" dialog?
what a bunch of weinies.
What about someones waste or blood doesnt constitute a "reasonable expectation of privacy" ?
You think that because tests now only go back to 30 days or so that thats all the govenmemt will use? what about when they can look back into your college and highschool years? what about when it not only applies to people in govenment housing but farmers getting subsidies or people near the Red River getting disaster relief?
Job startup funds? college loans? better yet the gov just bailed out GM and AIG/ freddie mac and fannie may and citicorp. so what if YOU want a loan from one of those banks? YOUIR gettiing federal money. what if you went to lease a work truck and GMAC wanted a hair sample to see if you had smoked a joint in college? Some of you guys need to open up your eyes. Your going to be the ones who give this country away, gift wrapped.
