Just got to play with it for the first time today. Given it's reputation for gather internal dust, I slapped a B&W MRC (or whatever it's called) UV filter on it. Quite a bit bigger than the Tamron 17-50...

A bit fuzzy on the dogs ear, but she wasn't exactly sitting still.

As the reviews have noted... it's not a "L" quality build, but it's smooth enough and very quiet. The Tamron would wake the dead.

Picked up a Tammie 18-270...So far I have been pleased. Pretty sharp, focuses well unless real dark out. When I want to travel without a lot of extra lenses it combined with a Canon 100-400 makes a good combo...

I shoot the 100-400L too,but it's pretty slow. Depending on the DSLR,you may get some back by bumping ISO,but fast glass is fast glass.

My default lens,whether XTi,40D or 1Ds is the 28-75 F/2.8 Tammy. Much prefer it to my 17-40L or 70-200 F/2.8L.

She's amazing.

TryMe do you have some pics from the Tammy that you could post, I would be interested in seeing what they are like. I use the 17-40L on my 40D and 5DMkII and love it...very sharp lens...but it does lack the speed of the 2.8. I sold off my 70-200 F2.8 IS and kept my 70-200 F4 IS because it was sharper.

Yes, the 28-75 Tammy rocks....How do you like the 1D? Trying to decide between the 1D and 5D...Have a 30D and a 40D but looking for mo' better...

I'd go 5D MKII and bank the ISO latitude,in conjunction with the video capabilities.

Bang for the buck,the 40D is a monster and very difficult to slight.

I dig the 1Ds's "toughness" and weather sealing,though it's a bitch to navigate the controls one-handed(like when fighting fish). The Tammy do nice things on the full frame sensor and I tend to keep the 17-40 on the crop bodies.


Like everything...it's give and take.

The 17-55 is one of my favorite lenses. Bigger and heavier than the Tammy but the addition of IS and the performance at f2.8 makes it a perfect walk around lens for me.
This combined with the 70-200 f4IS makes a great travel combo.
Add the 100-400 and your in great shape.
I hope you enjoy the 17-55 f2.8 IS as much as I do.
This is one lens that I do always keep a filter on and like some one else mentioned up-thread I only use quality filters.
B+W or Heliopan.

The 17-55 is great but I choose the 16-35 with my 1dsMkII for sharpness and straight lines. I also always use quality filters to protect from scratches from cleaning and bumps. It's a bear to use while canoeing and fishing.
