I was pulling bullets and mistakenly dumped about 75 grs of benchmark in my H322 1lb can which was near full. I scooped a bunch from the top of the can but am wodering if its safe if a bit is mexed together?? I hate the idea of tossing 1lb of powder but if its dangerous I will in a heart beat.

Cheers!!

75 grains is just over 1% in a pound of powder. if you scooped a bunch out it is much less. I don't normally load so close to the edge that less than 1% would make a difference.

How much are your hands, arms, eyes, etc... worth? More than a lb of powder?

How many lbs of powder could you buy for the cost of a trip to your local ER?

I wouldn't worry about it, I've done it with no ill effects, the percentage will be so little with each load that it won't be noticeable, but if it was 10 of those rounds, it might cause some trouble!

Mix the living daylights out of it, then always mix it again before you pour in the measure. Take a look at a burn rate chart...it's "better" to screw up with slower powder, "worse" if you put faster powder in. But it is never a good thing.
One thing, your data for that jar is no longer valid. So let that be a lesson to YOU, youngfella.

....The Proportions you've described don't appear to be a problem with powders so close in burn speeds. You ought to never notice any difference in using that H322 at all.

Thanks guys. I think Im going to go with a new can just because Im working up loads and am looking for a good gopher load I can rely on. This minute bit of benchmark may throw off my loading data.

I think you will be OK, especially considering the small amount mixed and the fact Benchmark and H322 are relatively close in burn rate. Just keep your loads sane, and you should be fine.

If it was me I would mix it well and go ahead and use it. The burn rates of the two powders are so close I really don't think it will have any ill effect. But as I write this a saying my mother always told me as a little boy keeps popping in my head.

"It's always better to error on the side of caution."

Maybe Prwir is right! A pound of powder is a lot cheaper then your life.

If store shelves were filled with cheap powder, I'd likely dump it.

But they aren't.

Given that there's probably very little of the B'Mark in there, and also given that the two powders are nearly alike anyway, I'd mix it and use it. Without a qualm, either.

I've made a similar [bleep] up and used the powder after shaking the schit out of it.

When I was about 15 a friend of the family poured two different types of powder into his RCBS powder measure on accident. Damned if he didn't grab a ball point pen and stir it like it was [bleep] lemonade.

I'm not that bad, but I don't think you'll have a problem.

I'd use it, but I'd probably back it off a little and work it up again if I had any doubts, which sounds like you do some.

Who knows, maybe you'll find a new recipe that's just the ticket for something or another.

Scott_r: I do not know the answer to this quandary, exactly - wherein - would a modest amount of BenchMark in my H322 would be dangerous?
But I do know what I would do, and that would be to NOT compound my initial error, and I would dispose of that remaining powder!
It would be like pulling my teeth with no pain killer but I would do it none-the-less!
Better safe than sorry.
Lesson learned and thanks for sharing your human trait with us (to error is human and to error is inevitable when you are human!!!!!).

If that ratio worries you, add another lb. of 322 to the mix.

I doubt if it will harm you, but I personally would dump it. Cost is $18.00 and a lesson well learned and you won't forget it if it costs you money! smile smile
