I have a 99 in 300 savage, however not 100% sure of the model. Think its a "T" Will The serial number verify the model?

It will help narrow it down. Pass us the serial number (x out the last 2 if you want), the barrel length, whether it's checkered, and whether it's a solid frame or a takedown. Or, post a picture.

Oh, and here's a 99T.. scope isn't original, obviously.

serial number is 384798. It has same shape & checkering as Calhoun" photo. The length of barrel from end to forward edge of the port is 22 inches if that what you meassure. Seems to be a soild frame. Hope this helps. There is a "T" stamped on the forward end of the receiver that is normally covered by the back end of the fore arm

No, I'd never do that to a classic 99. All of my rifles I bought already had the d&t done to it. If done properly, there are standard Weaver and Leupold mounts that will fit and work. If your's isn't d&t, look around for a Stith mount. It'll run some $$, but it doesn't put any new holes in the rifle.
With that barrel length (300 Savage, right?) and the checkering, it sounds as though yours is a 99T. Congrats! Very desirable rifle.

Calhoun ---Were only some "T" s D&T.? I guess you were just lucky to get one that was.If some were drilled in the factory why would after market ones loose value. Is it that easy to tell the difference? With my eyes a scope would sure be easier. The stith are expensive even if you can find one,& not as good looking in my opion

To the best of my knowledge, no "T's" were ever factory D&T'd. Calhoun's rifle was done aftermarket.

Calhoun claims he bought his that way & would never d&T a 99. Guess he bought his used then.Right? How much would you lose in value if you D&T aftermarket

At one time you could special order a 99 anyway you wanted it, so a T model could have been D&T at the factory, but you would need a letter of varification to prove it, if I was the buyer...
One thing I can say with assurance is never say never with a Savage, they came in many colors...

Any factory d&t 99T would have a side mount, they didn't do the top mounts until about 1950. And by then the 99T had been gone for 10 years. Yeah, I picked up all of my 99T's in the last 4 years, and all were d&t'd by other people at some point over the last 70 years. When one comes up that's not d&t, other folks here usually bid it up higher than I want to spend.

I didn't use the word never. I simply said "to the best of my knowledge." I will say this though. I personally have never seen a "T" that I could say was D&T'd by the factory. The one that I have has NO EXTRA holes on it and it is wearing a Stith, only because I had one on hand. When I bought my "T", i fell just short of licking toes to seal the deal!!!!

My 'T" doesn't have a scope,a mount,or any extra holes,so I guess I should keep it that way and live with the peep sight. But how much more is it worth? When I die who gets it? My son is a shot gun shooter & doesnt seem to have a lot of interest in rifles or hand guns at the present. So either I make it a shooter and enjoy or die knowing I left a good 99 behind. What a choice to make.

If you are seriously looking for a shooter 99 in .300 Savage, there are plenty available to choose from. You could probably buy 3 good 'shooters' for what your 'T' is worth without any extra holes. I would imagine anyone here would trade you a good D&T'd .300 for your 'T'.

If that 99T has lots of condition, holes in it will drop the price by about what a shooter 99 would cost you. Don't go there..
For a shooter 99, finding a 1950's 99F in 300 Savage would be ideal and not too expensive. They are featherweights, and are factory d&t. Only thing they don't come with from the factory is sling studs, but plenty out there have them also. A d&t 99EG in 300 Savage is also a great shooter, but tough finding one that's factory d&t. Lots that are after market d&t though.

I would say it would drop the value by at least $500. Get a stith no drill mount, it may cost $300-$350 for the scope and mount combination ,but it also adds that much to the value of the rifle. Stith mounts commonly show up on E-bay. Don

Don, if he has the correct sights and removes them for the Stith the value will probably drop.
spartabruce, describe your rear and front sights for us.. correct (book) sights are VERY rare on 99T's, and can up the value significantly.

I took the ORIGINAL sights off of mine and put them in a labeled envelope in a box with ALL the other original sights I have so that if/when that particular gun goes, the original sights can go with it.
