I've got an 06. My son has a .280. We both envy each other but neither of us would trade. Pretty much covers it. smile

Realistically, there is no difference. Sure, you can get heavier bullets for the '06 for larger critters, but this is a moot point considering some of the premium controlled expansion bullets available in both guns. Both will take game up to and including elk, and recoil is manageable in both. Only real difference is '06 ammo is available anywhere, whereas .280 is not. I have killed deer with both, but my go to gun will always be a 700 Mountain Rifle in .280...

George,

I saw a bumper sticker in WY once that read "If you ain't got a 280, you aint got schitt"

Having had 5 different 280's & still having 2, I can use one on Monday, and another one on Tuesday; since I still have 2 '06's I can use them on Wednesday & Thursday; on Friday, Saturday & Sunday, I can use a 270 Win or a 7-08..........since I can't tell much difference, it really doesn't matter which one I happen to pick up.

The .280 will no doubt shoot microscopically flatter at some ridiculous distance, and drift in the wind some fraction of an inch less at same.

So if you ignore the fact that the 30-06 will be carrying significantly more energy at those ridiculous distances, with a bigger, heavier bullet... and will still hit the vitals at any range the .280 will since the wind drift is so microscopically less...

Then that makes the .280 SO MUCH BETTER that it's worth over 60 pages of bile and insults! Not to mention, limericks <g>.

I learnt this on the 7-08/.308 thread.

Jordan, I'll suss it out with you just for fun, if you want, but let's do it in PM's if we do it, OK?

Not up for another public pissing match <g>.

For chits and giggles, though, if you do start to explore this one make sure and run the #'s for (say) the 208 AMAX at around 2700 fps... BC is .648.. it's a game-changer. With thanks to Shane for posting about that bullet.

Sorry Jeff,
I dont think that is true. The 7mm bullet with a high B. C. will have more fps than the 30cal bullets and at extended range it will have more energy than the 30cal bullet.
