Hi,
I reload for ,17 Rem Fireball and I was thinking about buying a .221 Rem Fireball. But, on checking with QL I found that the .221 Rem Fireball Pmax pressure, at 46,412 psi, is far lower than the .17 Rem Fireball. Anyone know why ?

The .221 was pressure rated down by Remington at creation, and it's stayed that way.

Suffice to say, my .221 normally goes a bit "warm", and I've seen no adverse signs.

The .17 Rem Fireball was standardized both by SAAMI and CIP as a rifle cartridge and set to Pmax (piezo) of 55000 psi or 3800 bars.

The .221 Rem Fireball was standardized as pistol cartridge by SAAMI for 52000 CUP, by CIP to 3200 bars which translates to approx. 46500 psi. I assume that the copper crushers used for .221 testing were of the smaller pistol type, so the piezo readings are always lower than copper units. (For the bigger rifle copper crushers it's just opposite, piezo higher than copper).

So, I'm guessing that both cartridges have the same intrinsic strength but the designation, one as pistol the other as rifle, has determined P max.
