Haven't even seen it yet but it's on the way. I know there are a few .405 shooters here. What are you gents shooting in them? reflex264

'Flex - that's a dandy looking rifle. I think you're going to enjoy it as much as you enjoy all your big bore rifles!

Hello reflex. Very nice find. I have two 405's. One in the #1 and one in a 95. I only load for the #1. I use magnum rifle primers, Tac or H4895 for powders. I shot hornady 300gr fp for practic and load development and i hunt with woodliegh 300gr rn. I'm still developing the 400gr load. I haven't hunted it alot so i haven't killed anything yet. 358mt

My .405 Ruger No 1 shoots under 1 in with 61 gns of varget and a 300 gn Hornady f/p. Muzzle velocity 2340 fps and boots a bit. This load is rated top end on Hodgsons Powder web site but shows no signs of being anything but perfect. I started at 57 gns and went up from there.

300 gr Barnes X with a case full of either Benchmark or H4895. Strangely, Varget hasn't worked for me - - yet. With the 300 Hornady, I am getting just at 2450 ft/sec, and just over 1" groups.

Plinking load is 25 gr of AA5744 with a Sierra 210 gr SJHP 41 magnum pistol bullet. Should make a decent grouse load. wink

Hey guys, How you all doing. New to this forum, but have enjoyed following it for some time. I can't resist much about the great .405 wcf. Started with the Win. 95 in 2003 and added a couple no. 1's in .405 recently. These rugers are certainly a step up in the world of .405's. Look forward to hopefully adding what I can to this single shot forum and anything else along the way. Mouse.

Welcome to ya. I love my #1H in 405. It's a sledge hammer disguised as a tack driver.

Shootist Thanks, I agree, unless you've taken the .405 up the ladder from the mod.95 to the no. 1 your missing some great accuracy and reloading opportunities it simply is everything in one package. Mouse.

Reflex, that defininetly is a nice looking no.1. Tomorrow will be like Christmas all over again. I don't know what powders you have on hand but a good place to start would be H4895,reloader 7, or reloader 15. Mouse.

If they've ever made a better powder than the old reloder 12 for the 405 I sure never found it. rl15 is close but not quite as good in accuracy and velocity.
When the Northfork bullets were being built by the original owner and designer they were the bullet to beat, don't know how they work now, at 2$ a pop don't think I'll find out either.
Cast bullets and 5744 just simply go together well. The Lyman 412263 bullet is the best I've cast and used. The RCBS 400CSA bullet works pretty fair for a heavy, also the rcbs 325 gr gc bullet for the 416's sized down to .413 works pretty fair for general getting to know ya bullets without shaking your fillings loose.

the most expensive bullet there is isn't worth a plug nickel if it don't go where its supposed to.

Thanks fellers. I didn't get it today but I know it is in shipping. This will give me a good mild to shoot big bore. My .416 Rigby #1 usualy gets loaded up close to potential which means fillings get rattled. My 45-70 #1 is loaded up with 350grs at 2320fps (safe and pressure tested for use in the Ruger only) which also rattles teeth but shoots 1/2" groups. I am looking forward to this one. reflex264

I was really never interested in the .405 until I found out that it was really a .411...and that I could shoot all my .410 pistol bullets in it... So far I have "collected"...

Ruger #1 stainless
Winchester 95 (newer version)
TC Encore
..and just bought one of the Davidson's limited edition 1886 Winchester High Wall single shots. It has the 24" octagon barrel and 1.5" think Pachmayer Decellorator pad attached. The 22" and 28" versions both have tang sights and STEEL CRESCENT BUTT PLATES!!!

The flat steel butt plate on the Winchester was bad enough I had it replaced with a thin Decellerator pad.

Have only done a little reloading and have shot some 350 grain cast, 210 Speer God Dot HPs and some Hornady 300 RN. I have a lot of bullets, molds and brass but just not quite enough time to put it all together. Not sure how they will fit but I have some 400 grain SPs from both Shell Reloading and some of the new Hornady 400 grain .410 bullets for the 450/400 that they are now loading for...

Just saw a #1 blue/walnut sell on Auction Arms...for a whole $580 with a scope... Was hard to pass up but honestly I have seen more figure on a boat paddle than there was in that piece of wood...

GREAT caliber...Bob
