Pricing a 2004 Ranger stepside, 4WD 6cyl, 5sp stick, with 28,000 miles. Has studded snow tires, so would need to get tires for it. It was a ranch truck, but looks great. $10,500. What do you think?

Is there another small truck that would be better for the price?

3.0 or 4.0?
They arent bad lil trucks. And that 4.0 has some balls.
Price doesnt seem to bad. Why not just pull the studs and run the current tires?

kbb shows it going for $9500. kbb has been optimistic since the recession started. I say about $8500.

Yes I believe you can pull the studs. Dunno what your needs are with the truck but the 3.0 is goona get a lil better MPG, But your goona have to spin the motor to get the power outta it. 4.0 not so much. My 99 ranger has the 4.0/auto I average 5100-5200 lbs GVW. Only real complaint about the truck is I wish it was a 5spd. Might give the Mazda's a look. Same truck just lil uglier I would be looking at what rigs are going for locally before I even looked at KBB. For what they consider a good condition toyota pickup to be worth I would think everybody would be driving them. KBB is a joke IMO

pulling studs isn't nearly as much fun as it sounds, but it can be done with some good needle-nose vice grips.

Pulling studs is a PIA but doable. I use a "duckbilled pick", basically get under it and pop it out, or you can pull (like mentioned above)
10,5 is high IMO for a '04. I'd look around. we have roughly the same truck at work with the 4.0 and the mililage sucks.

What are you getting for mililage?
I was averageing 15mpg loaded down with all my tools. Havnt ran the numbers but I picked up 50 miles per tank when I swapped in a set of manual hubs. Surprised the hell outta me.

4wd is a drag on the drive train, causing lower mpg. I don't need 4wd.....just 2wd and a good set of tires (WRANGLERS)works great for me, and improves your mpg. I get 18-20 mpg depending on the load I carry. Most of my driving is mixed highway/city/hilly open country terrain.
I have the 3.0L V6/auto trans Ranger Supercab. Bob
