I'm going to go with an over/under combo, either a Savage 24 in 12ga/.30-30, or a (?) in 12ga/.357 Mag.

TO Mannlicher:
I'm no kiddie. Just trying to have some fun. Don't take everything so seriously. It doesn't hurt to have a plan in these times, the end may be closer than you think.

This is too easy! My rebuilt H&R M1 Garand. No scopes to worry about breaking, a bayonet can be attached and its totally reliable.

Only one gun? It'd have to be a high cap 223 with a red dot sight. I could do a lot with that one gun, but if it really came down I'd also be packing a pistol and a shotgun as well.

One thing that's rarely mentioned in these threads is that most guys thinking of a SHTF scenario forget the most important thing......training for that day. If you're not actively developing the skills/mindset required for this day you're neglecting the most important part of the equation. Far more important than what firearm you've got in your hands.

From watching Survivor, most people couldn't start a fire with the aid of matches or a lighter.

Whip,

Just sent 1,000+ rounds down range in pre-deployment training.

There's nothing like shooting to get better at shooting.

Trigger time does more to improve shooting than anything else, IMHO.

I'm thinking my soon coming FN PBR 24" DBM in 308. I like the idea of the reliability and easy maintenance of a CRF M-70 bolt gun, you'll be able to find lots of ammo, and you can kill most anything with it.

I like the 22lr idea also. For me it would be my Kimber K22 and all the ammo I can carry.

I also sort of like the Marlin 30-30 idea. I could do that one too. Seems like it might cover more situations.

A Marlin lever in .38/.357 might be the best choice of all. Plenty of ammo choices...

I think it would be any gun that I had the most ammo for.

1000 rounds is a good way to spend an afternoon. It do go quick, don't it? God Speed and God Bless regarding your deployment.

I don't know if it is truly an Armageddon gun, but if I were to be stranded on an alien planet and I could have one gun that had to work for the rest of my life no ifs, ands, or buts there could be only one choice. I would choose a M38 Moisen-Nagant. A nice powerful cartridge in a short handy rifle that is simply unbreakable.

Large enough kill big game and small enough for rabbits and squirrels. Good down range ballistics. Wife and children could shoot it. and you can reload for it.

Walter and some others kinda beat me to it, but:

Colt 6920 with a SureFire suppressor, Aimpoint T1 in LaRue Mount, folding rear BUIS, 10/20 rd Magpul mags loaded with 60-grain NP or bonded Federal 55-grain TRU, a CMMG .22LR conversion unit in the BOB along with a 6X Leupold in LaRue SPR-E mounts for hunting.

It will kill anything in the lower 48, including the usual suspects...

And I'd bring along about 5 close friends similarly equipped, some with med skills, etc.

And lots of survival training ahead of time...
