I was just goofin' ya. I know you like those big boomers, and getting your teeth knocked around. grin

I like the .444 for no other reason than it is different. The .444 and the .450's can be had a bit cheaper around here too, prolly because the don't get as much interest.

Speaking of buying guns, what is the going rate for a Rem 700 Classic in 7-08? I found a pretty nice one yesterday for $475. Is that deal?

sounds fair to me.

that's a classic? as in the classic series where they chamber a chosen caliber every year? or once did anyways?

Yep, thats the one.

I guess I wouldn't consider a 7-08 a "classic". It is a nice looking rifle, nice wood, good bluing. I don't think it was used much. I don't have a bonner for the cal. but it seems like a good price.

I may wait a bit, it's at a pawn shop. That tactic has bitten me in the ass more than once though.

Dave, I've got the 45-70 in the #1 and don't need two 45 calibers. When/if I get rid of the Marlin I'll pick up a 6.5 or 7-08 to play with.

Actually I had the 450 before the 45-70 was given to me by a former hunting buddy. I bought it with the intention of taking it moose hunting. Than I found out from the outfitter that most shots averaged over 200 yards. So I took my 06 instead.

My friend had to give up hunting with us due to health problems and he wanted me to have the 45-70. Sure couldn't turn down a deal like that.

Hey Bill,

Do you get up here much? There is a decent deal on a 7-08 at a pawn shop up here. Remmy 700 Classic. Under $500.

Tom, buy my Marlin and I'd only have to give them $25. smirk Seriously, did you try talking them down at all? Can't imagine a Pawn shop giving anybody anywhere near what an item is worth.

Is it at Pawn America by any chance?

I know of one pawn shop that you can haggle with.

No, it wasn't Pawn America. It is Wausau Gun and Pawn or something like that. Just down the road from Pawn America. The shop is in Schofield,WI. makes sense eh? crazy

The price was $600. He'd take $475 fer it. If your Marlin was a 45-70, we could maybe work on something.

Speaking of big caliber rifles,I also have a Ruger .44 carbine that I hunt with some. It's about one of the handiest small stature but large caliber rifles I have ever had.Semi auto to boot.

I had one too back in the erly 60's Stan. One of the many guns that I kick myself for getting rid of. It was sure nice to carry, but was hard to load.

Sweet little rifles indeed. I had a 77/44 Ruger, that shot nice patterns, not groups. Even at 50 yds. I wish that thing shot better because it was a perfect handling rig. I loved it. It just wouldn't shoot worth a damn.

Congrats Bangflop! Now the hard part starts...you gotta grow up. Well, at least a little bit. Never mind, you don't have to grow up.

Are you going to college boy? That is where you find out, you really did have it made when you were 18. Well, 21. smile

Fishing was great, Griz. Between Wed. eve and Fri. eve the wife and I caught about 2 dozen that were 12" or better, as well as some 10"-12" rock bass and a few black crappie. If you discount the minor(?) incident involving a semi-rotten fish carcass and our chocolate Lab, things couldn't have been better! sick

My wife finally consented to get a fishing license this year. She always said fishing was boring, but I guess watching me yank in these perch for several years while she read or did crossword puzzles (now that's boring!!!) got her interested. Her first one this trip was 13" on one of my ultra-light spinning outfits. You should have seen the smile on her face! I think I finally have my fishing partner. She still says she won't get up at 5am but I'll work on that issue.

I have some pictures from this trip but I can't seem to figure out how to post them in my message. Can somebody help me out with some instructions?

Ron,those are some darn nice perch. What's the bait of choice. We used to be able to buy wigglers (Helgramites) around here, but haven't seen any in the bait shops for a long time. Perch sure liked them.

My late aunt was quite a fisher. She and my uncle would fish lake Winnebago for perch and Walleyes and she would usually out fish him. I've tried to get my wife intertested in fishing, but no luck so far.

Went up to my SIL camp Sunday to check out the bear bait site. It was cleaned out. Trail camera showed lots of Raccoons and one small bear. Mosquitoes were out in force along with the ticks. I picked 2 of the little baztids off me.

Stopped by one of the neighbors to chat. He lost some of his shingles to the wind this past week.

Saw a larger bear out in a farm field on the way home.

Bluegills are starting to bite. They're still in 8 feet of water.
Wanted to go out today, but the wind is howling again.

Bill,

Where is your tag for?

Was out on Lake Wissota, in the Eau Claire area this weekend. The big gills were starting, but not going crazy yet. Next weekend if the water warms a bit I think.

Hooked somthing crazy big, stripped my blue gill rod. Like stripped it clean. Didn't even get a look at the fish. I'm thinking it was a big cat, but there are Muskies in Wissota. I was using crawlers under a slip bobber in 6' of water. I can only guess...never faught, just kept pulling. Tighted the drag completely, and it still pulled, got to the knot at the end and SNAP...gone. Exciting.

Dave,

How was the Captian's weekend? Good I hope.

tom
