I go to this rifle because it works. I know my limitations with it and I also know my strengths with it. This 7mm Remington Magnum has killed a lot of animals.

my only elk rifle is a ruger mk2, wood/blue, 30-06, shooting 180gr partitions. it has never failed me. i've used some 300 mags in years past, and they killed just fine, but they're gone now. i've got a hunt booked this year and have been toying with taking my 270 win, but i imagine i'll just take the 06'.

When in grizzly country, it's my M70 358 Norma with 225TSX's at 2950 fps. Otherwise it's my pet sheep rifle, a 6 3/4 pound 280AI with 150 TSX's at 3050 fps.
Anybody who seriously concerns themselves with the adequacy of a Big 7mm for anything we hunt here short of brown bear, is a dufus. They are mostly making shidt up. Crunch! Nite-nite!

I've been elk hunting twice, first time I was packing my 700 CDL SF in a B&C stock (30-06) with 165 gr Accubonds @ 2850 fps. Got a big bodied (590 lbs dressed) with a smallish 6x5 rack @ 100 yards, worked awesome. Second trip I was packing Sako 85 LSS in 338 Federal, loaded with 210 gr TSX @ 2625 fps. No elk last year. This year I will most likely be packing my Rem 700 8mm Mag with 200 gr TSX @ 3000ish FPS, probably will work ok my first elk, 2007, taken with the ol '06

Kimber 300WSM with 165 TSX or 700 Mountain rifle in 280 with 160gr TBBC.Both have taken 3 elk each. When hunting in Montana around West Yellowstone I carry my tang safety Ruger 77 338 with 225TXS.

Got a safe full of elk rifles up to a .375 Ruger, the one that has taken the most elk for me and is a plain joy to shoot is an old PH 1200 in .270 Win with a Bushnell 4-12X40. Not the prettiest or best scoped rifle I have but it just plain shoots and that makes for a fun and interesting rifle.

I guess my Brno M-21 in 9.3x62 with 320 gr. Woodleighs is my newest best favorite elk rifle today, I hunt the black swampy holes in the Selway and most shots are going South. Used the .338 for years and it was perfection, but got bored with it and decided to use the 9.3x62 a bit more. I am not really particular about caliber for hunting, more into well constructed bullets and bullet placement form any angle.

I also, love the line about a "safe full of Elk rifles",,,,but I guess it depends on the distance. I like the 340 Roy or the 35 Whelen.

My Tikka 7mm-08 has worked fine on a couple elk. If I'm around Yellowstone(bears) then I'll carry my 9.3x62mm.

(oh and on a side note, a couple of falls ago I saw a griz just south of town up Lil Bear)

My favorite is my SS Classic Model 70 .338 Win Mag. The barrel is shortened to 23 [wish it was 22]inches.
It has iron sights, Warne Premier QR rings with a rear peep, a 2.5-8x36 Leupy, McMillan stock, Decelerator pad, and a newer K4 Weaver in QR rings for a backup.I have a KDF varmint brake for it but never use it, terrible shock wave and blast IMHO.
Since I shot the first elk with it I just seem to get it out whenever I go. I use 225 Bear Claws on elk out of it.
It will get an Edge stock next year and I bought an aluminum floorplate and trigger guard for it and I believe I will quit there.
My safe does have that problem that others have spoken about, and it keeps growing more "future favorite elk rifles". Bless it.

I like the 35 Whelen with 56 Grains of IMR4064/225 Nosler Ballistic Tip(Whelen) Very effective on elk here in Arizona. I also like 57 Grains of IMR4350/180 Nosler Partition in the 30-06. Lots of kills with this receipe, but the Whelen is my favorite!\\Jerry

I've used many rifles over the decades. The one I finally settled on is my Ruger M77 in .300 Win Mag. Using IMR4350 pushing a Hornady 180 gr SPBT with Interlock, the Hornady number is 3072. I hunt deer and Pronghorn(I used to call them antelope, apparently I was wrong) using a Remington ADL in 25-06. Using IMR4350 pushing a Hornady 117 grain SPBT with Interlock, the Hornady item number is 2552.

My Remington Model 700CDL in .30-06 is my favorite eveything in 95% of the world rifle. It's light, very accurate, and adequate.
