I'm looking to buy my first 22-250. I've been a bird hunter all my lift, but now I would like to start prairie dog hunting. I would like for the gun to have a thumbhole stock. My favorite is the Savage, but I will gladly look at others. Does anyone have suggestions on which 22-250 to go with?
Thanks for any help you can give me!

I would get that savage! I would also recommend you also get a few others, or at least a couple others, to go on a PD hunt. the 22-250 builds a lot of heat fast, and you will want to have another go to rifle so you don't shoot out the barrel the first time you go. I like smaller calibers, but that is me. less powder=more shooting, and less $$$. I do think the Savage, offers a ton of rifle for not much money, they are so accurate, as well. last trip, I took: 17hmr revolver (in case they attacked the bench) 17 rem 20 bobcat 204 ruger 22 hornet (soon to be a 17 AH) 222 rem 22-250 The 22-250 was by far the fav for long distance stuff(over 400) but most of the shooting was done with the 20's, which perform really well out to 4-450 yds, but when I got them warm walking in bullets, out came the 22-250. It definitely has it's place. I do hope this helps. larry

If money is not a concern get a Savage LRPV. You have a choice of twist, the 9 will let you run 75 grain Amax's for the 600 yard plus shots.
I also have a Remmy XR-100 in a 12 twist which happily plates the landscape with doggie innards.
The thumbhole Remmy stock is very comfy.
With all that said, save the 22-250 for your second gun. the first should be a .223 so you don't have to spend a lot of time cooling the barrel.
Savage again. Best for the money.

I second the idea of the 223. It is a lot cheaper to shoot, you don't lose the scope picture, and the bbl stays cooler.

Thanks for the advice 'halfmile' and 'Old Coach'. I just realized how much more expensive it would be to shoot a 22-250 vs. a .223! Especially when there is potential to shoot 500+ rounds! That being said, do any of you have recommendations for a good .223 varmint rifle? I definitely want a bull barrel.
Thanks,
-matt

Savage has 3, a cheap, medium, and high dollar.
Remington has several also. A friend just bought the VTR with the triangular barrel and it shoots fantastic, recoil is like a heavy barrel gun because of the port job.
IF I was starting over I would get the Savage 12BVSS or the Remington VLS. Savage's Accutrigger is a big plus for less seasoned shooters, you get 95 percent of what an expensive one gives you.
