After my wreck:

http://www.24hourcampfire.com/ubbthreads/ubbthreads.php/topics/3136348/1

I expect my current truck to be totalled--the drivetrain just took too hard of a blow.

Anyway, I am in the hunt for a new truck. So far, the Tundra is the clear winner, even though I get the GM family discount.
It has enough ground clearance and HP in it's stock configuration--I won't need to do any mods to a Tundra.

I don't need a 3/4 ton truck, and may main motivation for getting one was 3/4 tons last longer than 1/2 tons. However, my wreck taught me that the idea of building a bullet proof, long lasting truck just isn't worth the effort. The $14K of added features in my DMax were negated with one blow from the rear. Besides, I don't have enough time to build up another truck, I need to find one that will work in it's factory form.

The 5.7 Tundra does give up a couple mpg to the 5.3 Silverado, but the extra 66 HP, reliability, and ground clearance is worth it to me.

My 2008 has really been nice. I've got 25,000 miles on it and just have not had one problem. Don't think you will regret buying one and if anything the prices have to be lower from a year ago.

I'm not so sure the mpg is all that different in the real world driving. I got about 14/17mpg in my Tahoe, whit a listed mpg of 18 in town, can't remember hiway list.

It was no different than my F150 that I traded for it, and mileage was the main reason for the switch.

That was my thought as well. The new MPG ratings are conservative, and even under the old ratings, I usually got better highway mileage than what the EPA estimated.

I now have an 06 Tundra with the 4.7. I don't tow anything too heavy, a 1500# boat/motor/trailer 2-4 times a week. No problems yet, but it only has 44,000 on it.

I get about 16-17 with mixed driving and a heavy right foot.

I have an 2001 Tundra w/ 130K miles. Only thing I've had to mess with was a climate control cable break. I fixed it myself w/ parts from Ebay. It still has original shocks but am on my 3rd set of tires. The ride is still outstanding - nicer than my wife's Highlander. My wife asked why I don't get a new truck and my reply was because I like this one too much!

I'm getting 20mpg driving a steady 70mph on the interstate with the 4x4 5.7 Tundra double cab I purchased last summer. The specs say something like 17mpg, but it gets a solid 20 every time if I'm driving without stop/starts. It doesn't have the tow package, but I pull a 21 foot camper often and it has power to spare. I can't say enough about how impressed I've been with the truck....haven't had it long enough or put enough miles on it to say it's bullet proof, but I'm very pleased with it so far.

It certainly seems to be the class act of the 1/2 tons. For a $35K sticker, you get:

- 381 HP (6.3 sec 0-60 mph)
- A 4.3 gear ratio
- A six speed auto trans
- Excellent ground clearance with 32" x 11" tires
- Four full doors even with the smaller cab
- A back up camera
- A compass in the mirror

No one else seems to come close to all those features for that sticker................

There's a lot of used "asphalt cowboy" trucks out there for very reasonable prices right now...... JMO, Dutch.

Dutch,

Around here, good used trucks are as scarce as hen's teeth. That is not what I expected.............

That's because retailers aren't buying them at ANY price. Check auction prices, or see if you can get a dealer to wholesale you one. HTH, Dutch.

Last month was in Pheonix, we looked at the same package, but they started @ $33K, wife got 'em down to $28,200. This was on a Saturday, only 2 other customers for the 2 hrs we were there.
