I want to make my own stocks and I really don't have any idea where to start. I have a decent set of wood working tools and at one time I knew how to use them. Is there a web site or some other place that has dimensioned drawings of stocks? Thanks

Get a copy of "Checkering and Carving of Gunstocks" by Monty Kennedy and "Professional Stockmaking" by David Wesbrook and go through them. I had some general knowledge of the process and the tools, but these two books really sharpened up my skills and taught me all the things I wasn't really sure about like, offset, measuring a stock, dimensions, laying out the cuts, etc....

Good luck, you'll be hooked after the first one.

I haven't read the Monty Kennedy book cover to cover but isn't it about checkering mostly. Good book about checkering but I don't remember seeing anything about stock making. Am I wrong?

You know, you're right. I screwed up and pulled the wrong book off the shelf when typing my response.

The other book I wanted to refer to was "Restocking a Rifle" by Alvin Linden.

The Kennedy book is great for checkering, but not for stockmaking. Sorry about that, Woodsmaster, hope you can cancel the Kennedy book if you want to.

I bought the Alvin Linden book and the Wesbrook book used from Powell's books in Portland.

Thinking a guy could not be hurt by looking critcally at the rifle stocks in the Kennedy book... There is some good tuff about lay-out there.

I have the Al Linden book. It's a good one also.
