There are a series of thread's being at the moment about health care.

Assumming I am a reasonably healthy 46 year old, my wife 44. We both have a pre-exisiting condition that is controlled by medication, but otherwise are healthy.

what would a Cadillac health plan cost us in the USA?

I am wondering if the tax savings would more than make up for the cost of the insurance?

$12-15K US annually, with a $1,500k deductible each. after that, they pay 80:20 until something like $5k, then they pay 100%

let's say this is a $175K/year earner.

assume 42% combined taxes, plus the insurance (you can only deduct medical expenses in excess of 2.5% AGI. okay for a huge disaster, meaningless for an average year).

We pay 36% combined as our marginal tax rate, I\m surprised the tax rate would be as high as42%.

I would rather pay what the market would bear than have the government tell me where I could go or what treatment I was allowed to have...
Is this really that difficult to understand?

martinbins,

For the past 2 years,I have paid 709 a month for our family plan which includes me, my wife, my son and one step-kid. The other two kids are covered within their natural father's plan. However, I just received notice a few weeks ago our rate will increase to 831 per month effective Aug 1.

Our deductible is 2500 per year and the plan(Anthem BC/BS) is comprehensive and includes dental which basically equates to 2 free cleanings a year and discounted rates for procedures. For instance, my son just had 4 wisdom teeth pulled but I had to pay approximately 579.00 of the bill. I pay rather little towards uncovered medical expense obligations but, of course, I receive our benefits only after the deductible is satisfied. Further, for each medical office visit, I pay 20 dollars. I have absolutely zero problem of seeing my doctor within 48-72 hours; immediately if possible and if not, there is a emergency clinic right next door if circumstances require.

As our family ages, you should know our rates will most definitely continue to increase as a natural consequence of that unfortunate demographic.

I am 51 and my wife is 42. Under my plan and most others, I'd presume, you can cover your kids up to age 25 or thereabouts if they matriculate to college and post graduate studies. In the US, a parent isn't legly obligated to satisfy health insurance obligations for a child over 18 unless ordered otherwise by a court.

I hope this has provided you some insight as to how it works for many families here in the states.

38 years old and diabetic. I pay $258/month for coverage including major medical, prescription coverage, office visits etc...with a $5k deductible. That's for me only and a non smoker and caps at $2million.

That price is set by law in TX as it's the high risk insurance pool for the state - and it's 200% of the same insurance for someone else. So someone who didn't have a pre existing condition such as diabetis could get the same insurance for 50% of that price or about $130/month.

I don't like going thru the state - they just guarantee you can get insurance it's actually thru a private company....but since they offer it pretty much no one in the state wants to compete with it....see the problem here with government insurance? Everyone says you can keep your private insurance but I guarantee if the government offers a plan that you are eligible for it's going to be more difficult to find a private company to fit you.

I have BC/BS. Premiums for a family of four are $2574 a year of non taxed wages. Office co-pay are $25 and all labs and tests covered by the insurance. Drugs are $10/month for generic and $30/month for name brand.

Does not include dental and vision. Dental costs me $650/year non tax wages and vision is $290/year of non taxed wages.

I'm happy with my insurance plan.

The only health care provider in RI that you can buy insurance from as an individual is Blue Cross. I buy Healthmate. I get the healthy, don't smoke... discount and the cheapest plan I can get is $300 a month. I pay all my bills until I hit $300, then 15% until I hit $2500, then they pay for everything the rest of the year. I went to RI Hospital with chest pains on Feb 28. They insisted on keeping me overnight. They found nothing, gave me no explanation for the pain, and billed me $9000. Blue Cross covered $8000. I paid a thousand, then I get a bill for $100 - $200 every 2 or 3 days for things Blue Cross doesn't cover. I got a bill for $50 from a doctor in the overnight observation room, and I never even saw one there. He signed my discharge papers so he gets a cut, and I have to pay. The 200 people I was in the Emergency Room with that did not have insurance are being seen for nothing. Someone's got to pay for the hospital doors to stay open, and lucky me, I have insurance. My friend calls it Socialism and says that Obama will only make it worse. My gripe is that Blue Cross has a monopoly here. There's no other insurance company I can buy from so I have to pay them what they want, and I have to pay their deductibles. I don't have dental insurance. I just had a root canal and need a crown to save a tooth. It cost me $2700. I also had a melanoma removed the dermatologist told me was "probably nothing" and spent about $600 in co-pays for as well. That's over $5K in bills in the last 5 months on top of paying for health insurance. That's how some people get behind and lose their houses... I know people who are cutting prescription meds in half because they can't afford them or have to choose between medical care and heating oil... I cut firewood all Winter long for some elderly folks that can't afford oil. Health care costs are crippling the economy.

The only solution (not Obama's) is to get a handle on illegal immigration, get all the people who don't belong here out - as in no hand outs. No free school, no free health care, no welfare check, no sweat shop labor... Everyone who cashes a paycheck is paying for it. Everyone who owns property, pays for insurance... It's socialism, and the problem with socialism is that sooner or later, the government runs out of other people's money to spend!

Medical insurance (at least that which gives good coverage) is expensive and is getting more so, especially as a person ages. We need to control medical costs and make insurance affordable to all. Emergency Room visits by those who are uninsured are bankrupting some hospitals (some of whom have closed their ER's to control costs).

If you don't have or cannot afford medical insurance, what are the alternatives?

I pay $249.00 a month and I have to cover 1/2 of the expense of the first 20k. I know,I know,Im getting [bleep], but Obama said Insurance will get affordable, so I will change to his plan when it happens.

That's over a grand per month and it is expensive if just a individual plan. If't is a family plan which is comprehensive and includes dental, you're not that bad off.
