How come the 44 Mag is not on anyone's list?. It is quite capeable for North American Hunting. 41 Mag is also.

No love for the .264 WM?

10. 7x61 Sharpe & Hart- It may not seems sexy anymore, but this cartridge did what no other ever could: It made "metric" or "European" calibers popular in this country. I remember this little gal in high school that had one of these in a Schulz & Larsen,,She was sexy too...

9. 6.5x.284 Norma - Imagine a 84M Montana in this caliber..Shame it is too big for the action.

8. .340 Weatherby Magnum - Who hasn't had visions of taking a trophy brown bear at 300 yards with a .340 Weatherby? How True.

7. .250 Savage. Has to be in an 1899 TD carbine with a tang sight.

6. .458 Lott. What the 458 Win should have been.

5. .270 Winchester-What more can you say?.

4. .308 Norma Magnum - This should have been the winner of the race with the Win Mag.

3. .33WCF-

2. .300WSM in a Montana.

1. 22 Magnum: does what I always wanted a 22LR to do.

No question, .300 Weatherby hands down, going away (as in horse race). Just look at the cartridge...

This round is a darling among 1000 yard shooters, and it makes up into about as perfect of a long-range plains rifle as one could hope to get. It is a really versatile number, as well. The single greatest elk kill I've ever witnesses was made by a hunting buddy of mine with his custom 6.5x.284. The 140gr NP put the big bull down like a lightning bolt at 435 yards.

435 isn't even warming up for that round and certainly isn't far enough to impress at all.

I understand that 435 yards isn't a very long poke with a 6.5x.284....I realize it's a darling of 1000 yard shooters. However, it was the kill that was impressive. I've seen roughly a dozen and a half elk killed, and they don't often go down easy. This was a 700+ lb. bull, and he just hit the ground like somebody dropped a ton of bricks directly on his back. He literally bounced when he hit and never even twitched.

Although I was spotting the shot and felt it was a solid shoulder impact, the reaction of the bull indicated a spine hit. When we got to the bull, my initial observation was confirmed...he'd been hit in one shoulder and the bullet exited the other. Later inspection revealed both joints had been destroyed, with a large section of boiler room taken out in the process.

All this from a cartridge most would consider light for elk, and some (not me!) would say shouldn't be used at all. Stack that with the 435 yard range, and you have most impressive performance.

What could be a sadder way to end a life than to die having never hunted with great dogs, good friends and your family?

Two that I would add to this list are the 6.5 x 55 Swede, which has been around forever, or longer, and the 7mm-08, which is a relative newcomer. Both are as cool as it gets.

I can't believe the lack of love the 6.5 gets. For me a 260 or 6.5x55 would be number 1 and I rarely see it on a list like this. I think it is a little "sexier" than both your 1 and 2 choices and falls perfectly in between the two. But that's just me I guess, (and DanAdair).

Oh, I posted after reading the first page and didn't see all the other posts. I see a few others agree.

Seattle-my opinion is that the people that feel that the 6.5/284 is too light, and or shouldn't be used at all then the most likely don't have much for experience in the killing of elk.

One of my bestest friends and mentors of the world a man who's killed more elk and more big elk than anyone I know. He's always said that they quickest kills he has season in and season out on elk are with his 25/06.
