My buddy brought over his Rem 700 in 300 wby. This rifle has a looong throat. Loading 180gr Accubonds 1/32 into the case just makes the rifleings. WE loaded the ammo to fit in his mag box. We tried many different loads and the best group we got was about 1 1/2" at 100. Im told that 300 wby's dont shoot well with long throats. Is this true and what is his options.

Long throat? I know that rifles chambered in Wby rounds most have freebore.

I am sure your buddy's Remington in 300 Wby Mag does have a long throat, it is supposed to.

That is part of the Weatherby design and is called "freebore".
The idea is to allow the bullet a jump to the lands enabling the use of more powder in the case while keeping pressures ok.

So long as the freebore is cut straight there is no reason that rifles chambered for Weatherby cartridges cannot shoot well.

We are not talking bench rest stuff here, but they can be made to shoot well. I own two Remington rifles chambered in Weatherby cartrides (7mm and 300). I seat my bullets to fit the magazine length and they both shoot 3/4 inch groups routinely. I recently shot a 3 shot group of 0.273" with the 300 Wby while testing the 168 grain Barnes TSX bullet.

My dad has a .257 Weatherby Mag in a Weatherby Ultralight rifle. This rifle has had lots of work done on it, but it will shoot 1/2 inch groups routinely with factory ammo.

So do not fret over the throat in the 300 Weatherby, I am sure that you will find a good load for it. Mine shoots any number of bullets quite well.

About all you can do is seat the bullets as long as you can and still have the cartridges l feed reliably through the magazine. I have always been able to find a decent load (1 moa) or less in my .300 Wbys--you just need to try different bullets and powders. Check out JB's last "Loads that Work" from Handloader Magazinea few years ago.

Both of my .300s like loads approaching maximum. Backing off even half a grain opens groups up a bit...

Is this a dead stock rifle, or has the trigger been tuned, the bedding massaged, et cetera?

When you say many different loads did one of them use 84-86 grains of IMR7828?

When you say we do you mean you both shot groups? If your friend did the shooting is he accustomed to this level of recoil?

The trigger has been tuned and that is it. Im think im going to bed it for him. Yes we tried 7828 down to going .2gr increments. Rl 19 we got our best results. He has done all the shooting. He is a very good shot even with recoil. He also has a 375H/H and a 338 win mag that he cuts holes with.

With most Weatherby's one will never reach the rifling, as they must be freebored to obtain their smoker velocities. Try going the other direction with one's bullet seating. Let the cartridge get a good grip on them, and they often become very consistent shooters. that worked on my 257 and 30-378. I'm still toying with a couple of other cartridges.
