So, I'm in the market for a long range scope for my Sendero.

I was in a gunshop the other day and got to put my grubby mitts on the above. This is one of the "L" series scopes- the ones with the huge objective with the "cutout" that still lets you mount it in low rings.

It had the CDS turret. I liked that, too, though I'd have to modify it to let me go more than 1 rotation... or get an M1 instead.

Anyway, anybody actually try one of these "L"-series scopes? It could be a contender as it's right in the price range I'm limited to ($700-800). Other option is a Zeiss Conquest in 4.5-14, or 6.5-20.

Regardless of the VXL's functionality, I could never go there based on the scope's sheer ugliness! I'm sticking with the 40mm objectives. Get a VX3 4.5-14x40mm Long Range and have Leupold add the CDS or M1 elevation turret.

Sam,

50mm is fine if that's what floats your boat, I'm just not a big fan of them on my hunting rifles. On a Sendero which is way past the point of being light already, I'd be using something other than Talley lightweights anyway, so that the scope could be mounted a bit lower. I like the Burris Signature Zee rings or the Warne Maxima rings for that application.

The CDS (Custom Dial System) is a new offering from Leupold this year. It's a low "hunter" profile turret with a zero-stop. Haven't tried one yet, but probably will in the near future.

CDS are the new low-profile "hunting" turrets.

I went with 4.5-14 VX3s with M1s and B&C reticles. The reticle lets me use it out to 500 and beyond- I dial.

I have one in a LR configuration and one in a regular 1" tube. Both are great scopes.

Thanks Dennis!

I will, knock on wood, be buying a "big" scope in the next few weeks. I guess one thing to decide is if 14x is enough top end for what I want to do.

I shot this gong at 500 yds off a tripod with a Remington Mountain rifle using a 2.5-8 Vari X III with B&C reticle. The rifle has been rebarreled to 260 Remington. 8 power seemed small, but I had no problem centering the reticle on this 12" gong.

14 power is enough for anything but target shooting

Agreed; I shoot long-range with 2.5x8's and 3.5x10's all the time.

This Sendero is primarily a target rifle. So far, nothing I've done (and I've tried) has shown that I personally have any business taking 800-yard shots on game. frown

But, I enjoy the heck out if target shooting at long ranges, and the more I shoot at 800+ yards, the easier the 500-600 yard stuff gets!
