Howdy folks;

My first post here. After years and years of worshipping at the Winchester alter, have found the blessings of the 99. I have an as new mid-fifties 99 that I would like to scope with a contemporary Weaver K2.5 and need a set of Stith mounts to accomplish this task properly. Can anyone set me on the path? Canadian source would be best, but any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

<img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> This is probably the best advice I can give you. Either get lucky right here on the campfire, or go to eBay or Gunbroker.com. You may want to attend gunshows in your area. Other than that just keep your eyes and ears open. I wish I could be more help. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Thanks Longbeard:

Gunshows are out because I live so far out in the boonies in B.C. that a trip to town is an expedition. I have never gotten any joy from E-bay, but will try Gunbroker etc., and keep my eyes open as you say. Did get one hit here via private message, but by the time I pay exchange, the price will be $300. Is that the going rate? I sure don't want to drill and tap, but had no idea Stiths were so dear. I would have thought there would still be quite a few out there.

Thanks Jed,

Sn is 73889x. cal. 300. 12 rounds through it in its life. I got it from the widow of its original owner, basically NOS. After 35 years of Winchester lever actions, British doubles and single shots, am quite enamoured of this rifle's engineering, accuracy, fit and finish. May be a convert. Would really like to shoot it through glass, as my eyes are going and am curious as to the group it will produce when held fine on the paper. Only thing I don't like about it, that Winchesters and Marlins have, is that you can't reload while in battery. But that is only a tiny and theoretical [bleep].

Cheers and all that,

There is a lot of demand for Stith mounts for the 99. The price you stated for the 1" mount is not out of line. The same mount and scope for a Model 70 is about $125 if you can find someone to buy it. The 3/4" mount is less costly but you don't have much selection in scopes.

Take this for what it's worth, I have 3 "modern" 99's that have Weaver style mounts and rings and they look fine and shoot great. The last 2 deer season's my 99's have brought home the meat.

I have a pachamir flip mount for a 99. I think it's the same hole pattern. It's very tuff looking and the flip is much more secure then on the weaver version.

It's for sale if anyone is interested. And it's in canada.

Cowchip and jcberiau,

Vega's rifle is not D&T'ed. The Stith mount (Do-It-Yourself version) uses the tang screw holes and the rear sight dovetail...no screw holes added. The object being to mount a K2.5 without reducing the value of the rifle by drilling holes in it.

Just as Rick said, the rear mount screws in the tang holes and the front mount slides in the rear sight dovetail. The front mount is a sleeve that fits over the front of the scope.

The EG's were not D&T'ed till 1954. Vega's rifle is in the last group, made mid 1954, that were not D&T'ed.

Thanks all:

The SN is listed above in this thread. Rick, do you know the number of the first EG to be D/T'd?

From the data I have collected (mostly from good Forum folks) the first D&T'ed EG's started somewhere between 723xxx and 726xxx. Then there were a group that were not D&T'ed in the 735xxx to 746xxx range. Later numbers were D&t'ed. There are exceptions but the above ranges appear to be the big changes.

My father-in-law passed down his gun collection to his children a few years ago. We ended up with a 99 from 1927 based on the serial number 2998xx. I want to put a scope on it and found the stith mount option on the savage99.com website. I saw this thread while looking for info about stith mounts and have a few questions. How stable is the stith mount and will a newer leupold scope fit the rings. Does the rifle being scoped increase/decrease the value.

Rick99, make note of the serial #2998xx.

The most common Stith mounts and scopes are found with Weaver K2.5's or K4's. There is a 7/8" mount that accommodates the Lyman Alaskan but at a very high price. Even the mounts with the Weavers are over $200.

There is one model of Leupold that allegedly fits the Stith and there is a post on the forum about it.

The value of the gun will be increased by the addition of a Stith mount. If you otherwise drill and tap it, it will suffer significant decrease in value.
