For me it would be an all Alaska hunt. A Moose, Brown Bear, Black bear, Caribou and Dall sheep.

i like to read townsend whelens accounts of his wilderness pack trips... i however am much more comfortable in a canoe, than i am on horseback...

i suppose that the species hunted would mean less to me than the nature of the trip... a month long downriver float trip, with my son, in a red, wood and canvas prospector, highlighted by the opportunity to take a deer or moose would easily be the ultimate trip for me.....

in my mind, we'd both carry savage 99s, dress in wool, and paddle with hand carved cherry blades..... john w

For years I've been dreaming about hunting moose and caribou in Alaska. In a month I will depart for that hunt. I will spend ten days canoeing and fishing, with my son, on the Wood River Lakes. Then I will spend ten days hunting moose on a tributary of the Nushagak River. Finally, ten more days hunting caribou somewhere in between.

Since I will realize my dream hunt this summer, I suppose that maybe I need to dream another, bigger dream. Hmmmm, let's see.

Prospects look good for convincing my wife to combine a cruise of the Inside Passage with a May black bear hunt in 2005. But that's a pretty attainable goal so maybe it doesn't qualify as a dream hunt.

I have three preference points and two weighted points for mountain goats and bighorn sheep. Maybe some day I'll draw a tag.

I have seven preference points for elk. Maybe some day I'll accumulate the 12 or so points it takes to draw a bull tag in one of the premium units in Colorado's northwest corner.

I would love to hunt the only continuously free ranging herd of North American bison on the Wood-Buffalo National Park in Canada. I wonder if that's a possibility? Does anyone know if they allow hunting? I know there's a free ranging herd near Delta in Alaska. But that herd was reintroduced. The one in Canada has always been there and hopefully always will be. And maybe get one of the wolves that follow the herd. They are the largest in the world. Made so by the difficulties of killing the largest land animal in the Western Hemisphere.

The trophy fees put African hunting out of my financial reach. But if money were not an problem, then of course I would love to hunt in Africa. Elephants, Rhino and Hippos do not interest me. But leopards, lions, cape buffaloe, impalas and greater kudus, do.

KC,
Are you doing a guided hunt or a drop off hunt? I'm trying to figure out how to set up a DIY hunt for Moose and Caribou. Thanks

Boman:

It's all DIY. I've been researching for a couple of years.

First decision was generally where. I chose SW interior for a variety of reasons.

Then I Chose a pilot with a really strong rep. Got several first hard references. Had to book over a year in advance because most of his customers are return clients and he serves them first.

Next came the challenge of determining more precisely where to hunt. The pilot helped with that decision but I also asked several people who had hunted there before.

to take my dream float hunt, mentioned above, around the bend and turn it into an absolute FANTASY , i would need to be STRANDED , perhaps by some natural disaster, so that i COULD NOT GET TO WORK .....

the month long float trip/ hunt would be a part of my effort to do the right thing, both fiscally, and morally, as i endeavored to return to work..... <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif" alt="" />..... john w

Hippo!.... shot on land not in the water. Get between them and their water when they're out feeding on land and the rush back can be quite exciting depending on whether your standing on one of their trails or not.
But day in day out, either a walk in the bush chasing Sambar deer or watching my Brittany working is a dream day.
Cheers...

KC- There's a free ranging herd of Bison in UT and the permits are easier to draw for non-res than res IIRC.

Don't think I could ever decide on just one but these are on the top of my relatively short list- <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif" alt="" />

Cape Buffalo in Africa- Zimbabwe (if it ever calms down again), Namibia, or Zambia sound like great places. Hunting in traditional style- tent camp in the bush, etc....

Leopard and Sable anywhere they are both available and where the Sable would be over 40". Every time I see a Sable I want one hanging on my wall right next to my Gemsbok and Kudu.

Probably my top trip at the moment would be a Kodiak Brown Bear. I would probably hire Sitka Deer to take me in his boat because I know we would also get some killer fishing in along with the hunting trip. Besides, he seems to know that island like few people do and I love to see new country, especially on my own two feet.

A 400 Class Elk and a 36" Mule deer are also long time wishes, but I now realize that drawing a tag is only one of the many almost impossible steps to getting one these days. Luck seems to be the other big obstacle, since I have so darned little of it these days. So I've pretty much ruled out my chances of ever taking a trophy Elk or deer.

A great pheasant hunt like I used to be able to do would also be a great way to spend a day. It would have been great to spend it with my dad, who was a tremendous bird shot on pheasants and chukar. But, now with anyone of my hunting buddies who also appreciates good bird hunting would also be a great way to spend a trip.

Ah, enough day dreaming for one day- Bob
