Yeah, gotta agree with mud bogger on the cost thing. Costs doesn't have anything to do with what I take into the woods with me. Just my "hatchet" cost me almost $200, isn't that nuts! smile Buddy of mine and I were pheasant hunting last year (at Denman) and he kept asking me if I'd go into the brush to see if "we" could kick up any birds, that tin cloth is good for that sort of thing, but it did get hot (gotta hunt early)!

No, we almost never shoot a bird. Actually, I'm not sure we've ever shot a pheasant out there come to think of it. The only people I see shoot a bird have a dog, but I like stomping around anyway. I like finding grouse out in the woods better anyway, but going out for the pheasants at least gives me a good reason to get out in the field for something.

I have a negative about them. They don't sell normal size clothing like 3x extra tall stuff. They don't even have 2x extra tall, outrageous! I've never even found a size 8 hat. Their clothing is built for 'persons of small stature'. Other than that, I like them...I guess; at least I think I would if they made stuff normal (my) size.

I wouldn't be opposed to dropping that kind of money on quality clothes, but have this problem where ever 3 or 4 years my size changes and I have to get new clothes again.....

A good friend works in their customer service department. IIRC, all the single needle lightweight shirts are going overseas, under Filson supervision. The tim cloth stuff and other classic gear will still be made in USA.

The stuff is expensive, but we sent my wife's tin cloth jacket in for repair and they redid the sleeves (shortened for her short arms) at no charge I don't own much myself, but have nothing but good things to say about the quality.

For me and mine we have a lot of diffrent products made by Filson. Now that I know that some products are made outside the U.S. I will be more careful . Yes it does matter to me even thou I live in Canada, better our two countrys than somewhere else!

Other than price, no.

But, good schit sells itself, and they've been making some of the best for a LONG time.

The only reason I don't own a filson coat is they don't make my size. My arms are too long.

Last winter when my old redwing boots finally gave out and I couldn't get them rebuilt (leather too brittle, I was told) I bought filson. Couldn't find exact replacement for the rw's and I ran across these while looking. They're a bit spendy but I demand quality. Very comfortable right out off the shelf. Only disappointment is they were advertised as waterproof. They weren't... but they are now smile

To me the quality is worth it. Especially when it comes to footwear, winterwear and hunting clothes. I don't even look at anything except good quality wool. And I neve will.

Didn't know they've been bought out. Too bad. I've bought some of their made in USA stuff and been pretty happy. It is very pricey, no question. The mid-weight wools work best for me.

Some of the heavyweight stuff though is really heavy. They had a turkey vest in the catalog a few years back, I went down to their store, tried it on and it felt like I was wearing a suit of armor. Also expensive.

But some their heavy stuff does make sense - Tin Cloth bibs are great for going through blackberry bushes, like the ones in our back yard. And it lasts forever.

Actually, Filson wasn't bought by Ralph Lauren, but it IS being run by a former Ralph Lauren exec. Read here:

Are did you buy the Highlander boots?
I have a pair that I treat with the Filson boot oil and they have been waterproof for me and I have worn them in some pretty wet weather.

Uplander.

I used the supplied oil but was in wet conditions for several hours and it finally soaked through. Now I'm using mink oil with silicone. They'll be put to the test with first slushy snow in a couple months.

Pricey is the only deterrent.

I wanted a Filson Double Mac for many yrs and finally stumbled upon one in the bargain cave. I paid less than half. Having worn it now for a few years love it almost as much as I loved wearing my Grandfathers old Woolrich hunting coat I wore hunting in the early 70s.

Tin chaps were my first Filson purchase and I still have many yrs left in those.

I can see my grandson wearing my Double Mac and passing it down to his kids.

Filson is simply the best. The wool products are top notch. The oiled cotton, especially the Tin Cloth is tough. Try their wool socks; the Merino wool is warm and soft. The hiking socks are especially good; they are super smooth inside and you would have to work hard to get a blister while wearing them.

For those who had concerns about size, Filson makes some products up to a 50" chest extra long. If you need something special call their customer service at 1-866-860-8906. Ask about their custom program. It is expensive and slow, but you can get EXTRA long sleeves, unusual sizes, etc.

All the Filson clothing is excellent quality. I don't expect to get that level of quality cheap.

I do have their heavyweight wool socks, spent a couple/few days snow camping. I had forgotten my waterproof boots and my boots froze every night, frozen solid. I had a hard time getting my feet in them every morning, it was in the 20s and 30s during the day. I wore the same Filson wool socks every day, and every night. They would warm up, the boots would thaw and I would slush around in them all day, then at night I'd pull my wet feet and socks out of the boots and set the boots next to the bivy I was sleeping in (I didn't have a "tent" large enough to put the boots in). I would sleep in the socks, which would almost dry by morning, then shove my feet back into frozen solid boots and start all over. It was a testament to the quality of those socks that I could do that. Buddy of mine I was camping with couldn't believe my feet didn't get cold (they were cold in the morning when put into a frozen boot but once they thawed I was golden).

Very well said.

Until recently, I don't think Filson has ever spent much on advertising. High quality gear speaks for itself, and seems to remain "a known" through the generations.

Nothing negative to say. You pay for the quality, but keep in mind it is very tough clothing. I own a double mac and their heavy field pants. It's getting hard to find 100% wool clothing nowadays. I plan on buying more Filson stuff in the future. Apparently the filson wool cruiser vest is about the most versatile piece of clothing one can buy. I'd like a single mackinaw and a 2nd doubel mac someday too.
