I have a 30-06 LH Remington. I use Hornady 180, springfield SST ammunition. What is your advice on shooting practices? I have been shooting about ten rounds, then wait about ten to fifteen minutes and then fire off another 8-10. The barrel seems to get fairly warm after about ten. I just don't want to do any damage to the barrel or myself for that matter. Also, do you know of any target practice, especially off the bench practices that you use? I have been working with the rifle sling for better support, but I am not too sure I want to deal with the sling out in the field. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

If the rifle is for hunting you don't need more than one shot up to three for practice from each position and at each distance.
I see your in CO so there may be the potential for longer ranges. Longer ranges take a better aim in theory.
All guns should be locked up when not in use!

When I taught my wife to shoot we would fill gallon milk containers with water and set them out in a cow pasture with a hill for a backstop! We would put out five at a time at 50 yds. We shot standing and I would start on one end and she would start at the opposite side and whoever shot the middle jug won. This teaches you to shoot accurate and fast as possible. If you do this a few hundred times a deer seems almost too easy! whelennut
I like to do my hunting BEFORE I pull the trigger! There is only one kind of dead, but there are many different kinds of wounded.

Shoot 3, then let it completely cool before shooting more. You'll learn more about your rifle, and save the barrel.
