I think it would be a lot smarter than owning a 280 and 7mag...:) Split the difference...if there is one.

Have been able to hunt with only one at a time...

That is a tough decision! If you buy one, you'll wish you'd bought the other. I'd buy both and be a happy camper. You can always sell one. The good ol' .270 is sweet and hard to beat. With a good bullet in 270 you'll get complete pass thru's at over 200 yds. (lung shots) mostly. So it's got lots of kill em' power. I'd honestly but the first one that I found a good deal on. If you hunt elk every year, get the 7 mag. Hummmm

Go with the .270. You'll never notice the difference on game - but you will notice the difference on your ears, shoulder and pocket.

Six of one-half a dozen of the other. I doubt if even an elk can tell the difference. Handle a bunch of rifles in each chambering and pick the one you like best.

I wouldn't rule out the 30-06 since you Pop has one!! If you're hunting together and one loses or forgets his ammo ... you can share!!! smile

270 vs. 7RM .... I dunno, I cannot add anything to what has been said.

Split the difference?? ... go .280 Rem!!! 120TSX for Deers and 160 Partitions or other reasonalbe substitute for the bigger animals smile

There you go ... .280

Get the .270 and master it from real world field shooting positions. It will do all you need. After all, it comes down to putting a properly matched bullet in the right spot.

I would sure like to see the elk, pig, moose, kudu, gemsbok or whatever that would be cleanly killed with a 7mm Remington Magnum and "only wounded" with a .270 Winchester with the same shot placement.

With the right bullets there simply isn't enough difference to matter. I have seen LOTS of big game animals up to 1000 pounds killed cleanly with the .270, in both North America and Africa. If you can shoot it will do the job. If you can't, it won't--and neither will the 7mm Magnum.

270 with 150/160 Partitions will get the job done on bigger game. The 270 with 90 grain hollow points works very well on varmints. I have 3 270s and a 7 Mag. The 7 Mag doesn't get much use. If I need more than the 270 I go to a 300 Mag.

I prefer the 7mmremmag,and personally,I just don't have a use for the 270win.Anything that the 270win can do,the 7mmremmag can do just a little farther.

Of the 2 you mentioned, I would definitely pick the 270. But, in a perfect world you would have given the option for the 30-06 and I would have picked it!! smile

I'm with you on this JB, and I too have seen a lot of game taken with each. I imagine tween us at least one or two arks I imagine eh John?

I love my lil G33 in .270 and it's incredibly effective and then I also love my old 700 in the big 7 round. They're built differently but both work very well.

Honestly, I wonder how on earth anyone can see any diffs tween how a 150 Nozler @ 29+ our of a 270 and a 160 Noz @ 3K + take out elk. I've watched a lot of them taken out with both from near to 650 yds and if I do my job with either it'll do it's job. And if I screw the pooch with either then I'd better get my track shoes on as well... cool

I mean if anyone can see where 10 grains more bullet @ about 100 fps more (on average) kills mucho better then they're a heck of a lot more observant than me.

Threads like this are always kind of fun to read and see the responses...grin

Generally (although not always) it goes sort of like this. Those who've taken and seen a lot of elkies taken with the .270 then they're very comfy with the round for elk. And the ones that haven't been around as many elk taken with a 270 let alone any rounds sound a bit too much like some gun writers...(meaning, they've not taken many elk and talk down about the .270)

Hoo Haa! I'm a 270 fan and do not have one at the moment!! 270, 280, 7mm mag & 30/06 all good ones in my book. When I was looking for a mountain rifle I decided to take what ever one I found at a decent price (out of the 06 based rounds), well guess what........I found two 280 remington's on the same rack. One was stainless, one blued and wood(real wood). I picked the older wood one and got a good shooting rifle that will do most anything I want to do. Splittin hairs, we all do it, so pick the one you like and go with it.

JOC was right. The 270 Winchester on a Model 70 is a great combination as is the 30/06 and 375 H&H

get the 270 win. less recoil, great speed, 130's or 150's will kill anything you'll likely hunt, wide ammo availability, great reputation, etc.

I gave up years ago(sometime in the late 70's/early 80's I think)trying to decide which of these cartridges was "better",and just decided to own and use them both;which I have done...ever since then.

I just got tired of the "mind" games and comparisons between the cartridges(throw in the 280 and 30/06,and by default cause I have not owned one,the 280 AI)because they are so similar with similar bullets that a it's hard to tell a difference.Anyone that can make a really persuasive case for one over the other from the standpoint of effectiveness should run for Congress or pitch Obama's health care plan.

The real differences are about 150 fps,and 10-20 or so grains of bullet;the other real differences are in the rifles, more than anything, with the 270 being better suited to a light rig,and the big 7's for a somewhat heavier rifle.

If there is an advantage to the 7 mag, it's the ability to use the somewhat heavier 160 gr bullets at 3100,or a 175 at 2900,or about what a 270 does with a 130 and 150.Whether this matters much I dunno, but it can't hurt anything either.

With the 270 and 7 mags being so close in performance, throwing the 280 and 280AI in the mix is good for keeping the rifle nuts happy, jumping up and down for glee cause they got something different;but they give me a headache contemplating them, and not much else...I never bought into Townsend Whelan's characterization of the 280 as being "just a little bit better...." My 280's are gone now.

If you have any one of these calibers, you don't need to get the others.Buy a great binocular or a hunting license instead.

Mark and Bob,

Yep, the real-world hunting difference between any of the .270's and 7mm's is pretty much zilch. Rifle loonies can argue about 150 fps here and 10-15 grains of bullet there, but I have used most of them (and seen them used a lot) and there just ain't much that one can do that another can't.

If you really want to step up from the .270 you have to go a LOT bigger than a 7mm Remington Magnum. Even the .30-06 with 200-grain bullets is a relative baby step.

I have all 3, the .270, .280, 7mm Mag and the .280 is the best balance of all three calibers. Use 140 gr for antelope and deer, use the 160 grain for elk.
