I want to paint my 11-87 turkey gun, how do you guys prep the metal? Do I need to sand blast off the blue then prime? What paint should I use that will stand up to gun oil?
Thanks

PP, last time I painted any metal on a gun I cleaned the snot out of it with rubbing alcohol, it actually seemed to hold up pretty well too.

The hi-tech gun coating paints in the market are usually 2-component epoxy or polyurethane. Most of them recommend blasting the metal with a sharp-edged abrasive like 120 grit aluminum oxide to give a good tooth for the first coat. I haven't seen a primer recommendation, but that doesn't mean one isn't recommended. The best way would be to read the various spec sheets.

I just spray it down with rubbing alcohol, rub it clean with a clean rag, spray again and let air dry, then get busy with the Krylon. It holds up pretty good.

Brake cleaner will remove it. Solvents will too. Plain old oil and grease may be safe, not sure. I've Kryloned a few of my own, I really like the textured paints for a quick job and good grip.

I don't deliberately put oil on the paint, but don't baby it either. I think oil will soften up the Krylon after a while. With normal use the paint wears off here and there, just adds a little character. Easy to touch up or repaint. Some more of my painting pics here if you want to see roughly how I go about it. http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v461/montanamarine/Painting/Shane

I'm glad you posted this. I have been doing research on this very subject. Here's a couple of links to other forums where this was dicussed in 2007. http://glocktalk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=802258http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=324116&highlight=duplicolorNow this is the same guy in both links on 2 different forums. But I liked the feedback & I just bought a can of this Dupli-Color 500 degree engine paint in Cummins Brown (The 1200 degree stuff only comes in like 3 colors) I have just degreased 2 AR-15 mags, painted them & they are in the oven as we speak. IF any cares I'll take & post a pic after they cool. Mark

Yep...I've been useing Krylon for quite a while...easy & cheap. If you go to ever sell the gun, cleaning the stuff off is simply a matter of keeping the painted areas damp with brake fluid for a few hours.

Acetone (nail polish remover) and cotton balls/rags cleans Krylon off with a minimal amount of elbow grease too.
