I got to quit feeding trolls.

I did find the ignore button.

By the way, here are a couple of pictures Karl was involved with.

Sharpshooter, very nice pictures. Your middle picture looks to be a tremendous trophy. Will you comment on the cartridge used?

Mwarren:
You are most kind. That kudu was just a shade over 56". When Karl first put his binoculars on it he told me to shoot if any way possible. In advance we had discussed kudu and the particular property we were hunting was not very kudu productive. Normally more like 50". We were planning to relocate for kudu in particular.

I was hunting with one of Ralf Martini and Martin Hagn's excellent single shot rifles. This one is chambered in 300 win mag. It had a 1.1x4 Schmidt and Bender Zenith flashdot scope on it. I found it to be an excellent set-up and I shoot it almost daily. The load was 180gr Nosler partitions and 70gr of H4831. Probably going pretty slow, marbe 2850fps. The rifle has a 26" barrel so it might be a little faster than that.

Take care,
Josh

Sharpshooter, thank you for commenting on the cartridge details. Single shots are nice in that they typically have a longer barrel and still seem well balanced.

Mwarren, you are right in that single shots can have longer barrels with no mobility penalties. I am not sure what is so special about single shots but I have shot them my whole life and can't change now. The Martini and Hagn is in a class of its own. Best money I ever spent.

I've hunted with Thomas Goldbeck at Astra gamefarm on three different occasion. It isn't a big flashy, high dollar, operation but he does know his animals and last time there he had 212 sq miles to hunt. I will also state, "my bill at the end of each of the three trips was less than I calculated." It is so very refreshing to not be hit with extra charges.

BTW, bird hunting is also good at his farm with me prefering the sand grouse most of all.

I will second Boise's recommendation of Astra Gamefarm. Good hunt with good people for a very reasonable price.

I hunted last May with Jan Visser @ www.namibiahunting.net. Jan is the perfect gentleman. He is set up for smaller groups (2-4). You stay in his home like a B&B. He has access to 450 thousand acres, all free roam, no high fences. I shot 6 animals. 5 gold medals and 1 silver. Great food, great company, great hunting......He will be at the show in Houston in Jan.....

The short answer, "with a smile on my face." smile

We slept in, ate a nice breakfeast, had Balley's in my coffee, made our way out to a water hole within a mile of the house, and waited for the birds to come. They come each morning like clock work, and I'm guessing within a couple of minutes precision. It is pass shooting and one needs to make an effort to hide in order to keep the birds from flaring. It starts slow, builds up to a nice fast pace, settles down to a fun pace, then stops like someone through a switch. I don't recall how long it lasted but I think it was less than 90 minutes. We also shot doves but they come as singles and the grouse come by in flocks. They're sand grouse but are more like a dove than a grouse.

If you're a wingshooter you'll never be the same. You can hear the birds before they ever come in and their call is shared in several Africa movies. Your tracker runs for the downed birds and always has a smile on his face. At Astra, the birds go to the trackers so you can imagine they are rooting for you.

My first trip, Thomas the PH, lent me his shotgun. I think it was a model 37 Winchester, an old 12 ga. single barrel. I've returned two more times and always brought my own O/U (autoloaders are illegal). The number of birds varies, we taken between 15-50 at a sitting. I've only shot birds there 4 or 5 times. Thomas said is was very uncommon for hunters to shoot birds. He didn't charge me for bird hunting and the shotgun shells were billed at his cost.

I've also gone to the water holes and sat by myself watching the various birds come in. Not something I see mentioned here often but well worth the time. Thomas allowed me to take the truck myself and drive out for the evening. Sitting at a water hole in Africa by yourself is WAY COOL, being unarmed adds to the excitement.

I blasted a Francolin (sp?) that is something like a gray chukar. I ran around chasing the dang thing trying to get them to fly and when I got tired I stopped and ground sluiced one. Both the bird and Thomas were laughing so one of them had to get it. After this episode I didn't even bother with the hundreds of Guinea fowl.

I have to second REJ's endorsement of Jan Visser (Klawerberg). I hunted with him this April, and I cannot think of one negative thing to say about the experience. I took eight animals; one zebra (not scored), 5 gold medals, and 2 silver medals. The accommodations are second to none.

Jan offers one of the most amazing Hartman's Zebra expeditions available. You travel about 2.5 hours west to the Western Highlands and hunt on a huge private ranch. The terrain is unbelievable. I killed my zebra on the side of a mountain with breathtaking views. It was a heck of a climb, and a long day. Easily my best memories of the trip. I'd do it again tomorrow.

I am just so looking forward to this. A mate and I head to Namibia at the end of August and wingshooting is high on the agenda. We're planning to take some PG but I think the wingshooting will be right up there as well.
