I just received a Savage 1899 in .25-.35 and would like some help with it. It has a 26" round barrel, crescent butt plate, straight stock w/o checkering. Serial #484xx The stock was cracked and repaired and the bluing on the receiver is worn. The bluing on the barrel is pretty good. Also, if I manage to find brass and can reload some .25-.35 loads, will this rifle be safe to fire? Thanks for any help.

It should be safe to shoot if you keep the loads in the lower end of the scale. There is some lore going around that guns under 90,000 may not be safe. I think they may be safe as well. If the bore and all looks decent, I would use it.

Where can I get some reloading info on the .25-35? I think it is similar to the .30-30.

Looks like Hodgons is about the only powder comany that is listing reloading info for the .25-35. 25-35 data

Might want to pick up some old reloading manuals...the ones with all the oldies in them.

Cowchip...

I've got a 1960 Reloading Book that lists loads for the .25/35 using four different currently manufactured IMR rifle powders (4198, 4895, 3031 & 4320) with three different bullet weights (87 grain, 100 grain and 117 grain bullets).

I also have some reloading data for the .25/35 Winchester (6.5x52R) using VihtaVuori rifle powders (N-110, N-120 & N-140) with 70 grain, 86 grain, 93 grain and 117 grain bullets.

If and when you get the reloading dies and brass to reload your .25/35, come back to this forum and let me know. I will then take the time to write out the loads for your use.

However, even through these same powders are still available, the loading data was determined using the powders manufactured in 1960 and their chemical make-up and burning rate may or may not be the same now as it was then. Therefore, you should approach the "MAXIMUM LOADS" with CAUTION.

This reloading book also indicates these loads can be used in a .25 Remington as well as the .25/35 cartridge. From the drawing & data in the Handbook, it appears the .25 Remington is simply a slightly modified, rimless version of the .25/35, but I can't guarantee that's the actual situation.

According to the loading information, if you can use the fastest maximum load, you can expect to get muzzle velocities of approximately 2800 fps with the 87 grain bullet, 2450 fps with the 100 grain bullet and 2350 fsp with the 117 grain bullet. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
