I watched this on PBS last night. It was a very good show. Makes me want to visit Idaho.

I visited the Dallas/Fort Worth area. Absolutely hated it. I have heard down around SA is much better. If you guys say it is I will try to visit some day.

Spent a week outside SA one October in the early '80s, at Camp Bullis ( a US Army sponsored camping trip). I thought it was pretty nice, at that time of year, anyway. We jumped in at night, played aggressor to some Air Police for a week, and flew back to Ft. Bragg ( I was in the 82nd Airborne, B-2nd Bn. 325th Abn. Inf.) The weather was pretty nice, lots of deer and rabbits hung around our little base camp, pretty good trip. It did get hot on the ramp, waiting to board the planes back to Bragg (Kelly, I think, can't remember now), but overall, a nice place.

Kelly would have been it. Nice to visit but living here has made me really want the open air of Michigan, Wisconsin and or Colorado. Its not as bad as California but I don't see myself living here too long.

Teal,
Come on,you live in San Antonio, close enough to Corpus Christi to hit the beach and one hour any direction is great deer and turkey.Mi Tierra is a great Mexican food joint,90 minutes to Austin and all the tail you want to chase. If you want to complain about Texas, move to Amarillo, then I'll listen.

Corpus is nice but I am not a fan of the heat! Plus the drivers in this town are the worst I have ever seen. That includes my time as a truck driver.

Ratwhacker.... I did spring bird counts for the Govt. more than ten years in a row on Camp Bullis and covered about every foot of that terrain at one time or another (the bird crew probably knew the base better than 99% of the military personnel). One morning I was standing out with a clipboard in likely that same drop zone you landed in when a C130 droned over and all these guys with chutes jumped out and landed all around. Other times I would be birding just off the landing strip when a C130 would roar by just overhead.

Lots of wildlife on that base (typically the US Military has proven to be an excellent steward of their lands), most interesting of all a mountain lion or two. Best of all were the occasions we could get in behind the range fans, these areas suffering the least human disturbance and having high wildlife densities. Hillsides facing the ranges are literally carpeted with bullets, older 30-06 and .308, and newer 5.65. Coolest of all was the time I was working a hillside, with he machine gun range being hot on the other side of the hill. I would first hear the bullets impact the old military vehicle targets ("plonk! plonk! plonk!"), then hear those same bullets coming down range ("whoosh! whoosh! whoosh!") and finally the sound of the gun ("bang! bang! bang!"). NOT yer average bird watching trip

Anyways if ya made that same trip today you would be shocked at the wave of housing that has engulfed the place, such that Bullis is rapidly becoming an island in a sea of high-dollar houses.

At night, from most anywhere on base, you can see the fireworks and laser lights from Fiesta Texas, a nearby amusement park. Worse, some of the morons that have moved right up against the fence actually complain about the noise. Even worse, to the best of my knowledge, two water towers originally painted bright orange for visibility in case of low-flying aircraft were repainted in some other color on account of the resident idiots in the neighboring high-dollar development complained that they were an eyesore.

Well a good thing I enjoyed those years while I was in 'em, getting onto any military base has become much more difficult of late, a sad reflection of the times.

Now as far as Texas versus other States, near as I can tell the major drawback to living here is the almost complete lack of public land. Ain't too many places anyone can just up and hike for miles like in the Western States. Likewise most of the hunting is leased and often fenced in. On the other hand, the hundreds of miles of shallow Gulf lagoons are a priceless fishing resource.

Oh yeah, the birding is prob'ly the best on the Continent

It was showing places like the Sawtooth Mts, Owyhee Canyons, the White Cloud Range, 7 Devils Mts, the Salmon River. They were shooting much of it from a plane or helicopter and showing some awesome scenery.

All Fake! What they were showing was scenes of Montana or maybe Alaska. Idaho is a wasteland of dust and sagebrush, burned out and shot out forests devoid of game, filled with white supremacists, retired LA homicide detectives or Hollyweird rich folk.

I'd heartily recommend everybody stay away.

Rolly-I love North Idaho.Worked there in the 70's then came back in the 80's and finally spent the last 4 or so years up there in Athol because CDA is to populated with idiots with money.Nothing like Moon Pass and whats on the other side and the St.Joe is awesome butttt to many people for me now a day.Favorite towns as far as scenory goes is Wallace and Yellowpine.55 years in this State logging and I've never herd of the Gospal Hump.

But i'm sure you are correct but in the wrong State.

The Nez Perce trail road is a must-do-deal. The status of this road has been repeatedly debated in congress, and the enviros have campaigned aggressively to shut it down to all motorized vehicles. For miles and miles, it serves as the boundary for designated Wilderness areas, candidate Wilderness areas, and designed Wild and Scenic River areas. If youre an Idahoan, and have not traveled between Elk City and the Bitterroot on this road (F.S. #468), you have cheated yourself out of an opportunity to see and get into some damn big and spectacular country. This road is a little tough in spots, but you can wiggle through it with a pick-up easily enough. For the record, the road sign in the photo above is located 14 miles east of the Gospel Hump Wilderness area. CP.
