I got a nice FN Mauser (JC higgins 50) in 30-06 with intention of turning it into a 338-06 or 35 Whelen. I broke the rules and fitted a scope on it and took it to the range, luckily I could not get it to group.
I think I have decided on making it a 35 Whelen and I was poking around the Midway USA website and found that they sell pre-threaded and pre-chambered Shilen Barrels. They seem like a fantastic deal and I was wondering if anyone had built a rifle using one of these barrels? I know Shilen makes very well thought of barrels and was hoping there were no horror stories about the ones at Midway.
Also I was wondering if anyone knew a good gunsmith in South Eastern Wisconsin who could finish the job if i deiced to go this route.

I purchased a 6.5-284 and had Redneck ('smith on the fire) fit it. Shoots great. Send him a PM he can hook you up right quick.

Please note that chromoly Shilens are not lappped like the stainless ones if that's important to you.

I would have the gunsmith recommend one for you; bad biz saying "I brought my eggs, please cook them" to the diner...

I had heard the same thing but Midway says it is hand lapped, which made me think it was an even better deal.

I think that's an error by Midway. Shilen says they don't hand lap chromoly without an extra charge.

Butch,
I just looked at the latest Brownell's catalog (#62), and Brownell's sells prethreaded, short chambered Shilen Barrels for Mauser 98 actions; both large ring and small ring. Don't know if Midway carries them as it might be a special purchase by Brownell's. They're listed on page 133 of catalog #62.
HTH,
Don
Edit to add: They have them in 35 Whelen, but not 338/06.

Don, They may make them special for Brownells, but they are not a Shilen catalog item. Butch
