Stan, I'm surprised you're parting with one of the 45-70's. I see they chamber the handi rifle in 500 S&W. Any experience with it? I was wondering how the recoil was and if a youngster could handle it.

I haven't ever shot one, but the local gun shop had one a while back, marked at a significant discount. It came with a box of factory ammo (18 loaded rounds & 2 empties). The fiber optic front sight was missing. Apparently they ordered it for a guy, he shot it twice, the recoil from the last shot sending the fiber optic sight to parts unknown, and he decided it was more recoil than he wanted to deal with. Don't think I'd hand one to a kid to shoot.

Tongue and Groove barn wood?

You must have better/fancier built barns in that country than we do.

Thanks, thats what I was thinking too, but had to ask the question. I've shot a 500 S&W in a handgun and to say it's a handful would be a gross understatement.

From what I understand the Handi rifle in 500 is quite a handful. The 45-70 has some recoil but not any worse than a 12 gauge shotgun. It definitely isn't a kid's gun.I have at present two Handi rifles in 45-70 and a bolt action Siamese Mauser in 45-70.I absolutely love the cartridge.

Dave, Dave, Dave. Didnt we already discuss the barnwood job? Here you are talking about elk hunting when there is barnwood that aint gonna hang itself. crazy

See, since I am building a house this year (well, I think I am but that is another story), I feel the need to make sure everyone else gets their work done too. I will be the task driver this fall for Camp Chickenbuck. Stan, dadgumit, you better keep walking. Tzone, when was the last time you vacuumed? RWS, you better take out the garbage. Griz, you get some time off as you took care of the grandson for quite awhile, you deserve it. You others, get to it! laugh

I am happy?/not happy? to report that I have a blister. Clearing the lot last nite got me. Between the chainsaw and the rake, lo and behold, there it is just sitting there smiling up at me from my left hand, just below my middle finger. I never used to get blisters, what da heck. eek But with a office job, I guess I got a little soft.
