MtnHunter--hope all is well in your camp, I was gonna ask if you'd gotten your pawz on the Sure Fire yet?

Any idea as to what it will run for price?

Thx
Dober

The $12.99 light will give you technology that we could only have dreamed of 10 years ago. Its like with computers, what cost you an arm and a leg last year is now outdated. Or in other terms you can get the same technology that was cutting edge a short time ago for a fraction of the cost.

On the red lamp deal. I've never used that part for actually hunting or going from point A to point B. But it works great out at night stargazing to keep from loosing so much of your night vision when you turn it on for a second.

Yep, and the last 2-3 years have been real good to flashlite consumers.

Some great cheap lights can be found here if you're on a tight budget, DealExtreme Most of these Cree lights will put Barney Fife 's maglight to shame.

Dober,

Not in my pawz. The smaller Surefire Saint Minimus is around $129 or $139, I can't remember exactly. The larger Surefire Headlamp retails for $185! The flashaholics say October for release date.

Seriously, the Zebra is pretty nice so far.

Surefire lights at first rate no doubt, but from what I've seen of the Fenix, they are as good or better and a whole lot less $.

I've got a tiny Fenix sold under the Leatherman name (Serac 2), and have been very impressed with it's quality. It goes everywhere with me.

I almost bought a Surfire a couple years ago when looking for a "combat light" sized personal flashlight, but found this one instead.

I'm VERY happy with it's performance, size, warranty, and lack of CR123 batts.

My go-to headlamps are the Petzl Tactika XP, and PT EOS. Very different lights, but I love 'em both. A few months ago I bought a PT Apex (new 130 lumen model) and love it. It's a little bulky with the AA battery pack, and weighs almost 10oz, but WOW, what a light source!

I have a couple of Black Diamond headlamps that have served me well. I'd like to try out some of the Fenix stuff, but can't find a retailer. Anyone know a place in Denver that carries their product? Seems like a quality product for reasonable money (relatively speaking). I just like to get my hands on gear before I buy it.

The fun thing about the following site is you can search by battery type/size or by brightness. I picked up a Fenix LD20 and it kicks butt!

Please excuse me for reviving this semi-dead thread.

I've used Petzl's since about 1980, when the only model used those rectangular bike batteries. My last 2 were the MYO 3 and then the Tikka plus. Both my & and my wife's tikka plus were a bit on the dim side, fine for a trail but you could forget serious bushwacking. So on a recommendation I tried a Black Diamond 'Spot', which is now my go to headlamp, also replaced my wife's tikka plus with one

For a back-up and a brighter light I use streamlight's 'microstream' which uses one AAA battery and is small enough to fit in your pocket comfortably.

Firm believer in LED's, besides much longer battery life replacement bulbs are not necessary.

YMMV

Jerry

This may sound silly, but I got a Surefire Minimus in the mail about a week ago and have used it nightly when feeding the packstock...can't wait for it to get dark so that I can use it.

Plus's - BRIGHT, very adjustable, durable, broad beam which covers a big area.

Minuses - Expensive, heaver than my Princeton Tec and Petzl headlamps, but I don't notice it when using it.

Retail is $139, I think.

I REALLY like it a lot. Worth the money? I don't know. If you are a flashlight or headlamp fanatic like me, then I'd say yes.

I picked up a BD Icon, last season, and have tested it thourghly. One set of batteries lasted one full year. Used it on 4 week long pack trips. All of deer/elk season. A dozen or so overnighters and about 15 or 20 overnight searches. Granted most of that was on the lowest setting with the low intensity bulbs, but I used the spotlight on high several times each trip to find routs and such. Also has a battery indicator on the battery pack. The three AA's are a bit heavier than most lights, but if you do much work/travel at night, the extra light is worth it.

I used a PT Eos this season, and really liked it.

Funny, I have an Aurora and had the same hinge issues that Mtn Huntr describes. PT sent me a replacement screw, so I still use it as a backup.
