Good news ... Elk hunt starts on Sept 9th ... bad news, I drew a camp cook tag. Thats ok, roles will be reversed during my deer hunt.

The tame elk were huge. I watched the biggest shred velvet from his antlers on the barbed wire fence he was enclosed in. I'm sure he will be "stalked" and killed somewhere this fall. I feel bad for him - he's basically a domestic animal.

I walked into 2 separate herds of elk last week in the same day in the "spot". I saw a 6x6, 2- 5x5's, a spike and another moving through the timber I couldn't id points. I was moving slowly along an elk trail in the timber and walked right into the bulls. I could have shot any one of them with a bow. I also jumped another herd that I got no look at about 2-3 hours before the bull episodes. Suffice to say, the place is loaded with elk.

The only trick is to figure out what they do when October rolls around - and they get hunted for a month or two before I get there. I feel really good about it because this are is the north side of a huge ridge and has black timber interpsersed with small/medium quakie meadows. Plus it 3 miles back in. I'm hopeful....................

This big old aspen is at the edge of a small clearing many miles from any trail or road.
It is in the Hermosa Creek Wilderness.
Some nice bulls have been taken here over the years.
