This has already become an addiction. I bought my first Savage 99 last week, a pretty beat up 1950 .300 for a price matching the rifle. I just happened to be browsing the local Craigslist and thought what the heck, lets look up Savage 99. The add just said Clean Savage 99 in .300 caliber. From the pictures I have seen here and elsewhere on the web, I new when I saw it this was a very nice rifle, I bought it immediately. The serial # puts it at 1931 according to another website, I have purchased the book on the 99s but it wont be here for a while. I took the butt-plate and the forend off and all the numbers match the serial number, there is and 8 stamped in the front of the receiver and a big S stamped in front of the lever. The bottom of the barrel has the word Off with two arrows buy it has a screw holding on the forend so I guess its not a takedown? Any help you can give me on this I would appreciate, with out that book on 99s I don't even know how to tell what model 99 this is. Thanks.

no, its not a take-down... its a 99 RS... with original sling swivels (did you happen to get the sling and hooks for it???)
Not sure what the story is with the barrel markings but I wouldn't worry about it too much... lets just say you did real well buying this gun... it looks all original to me ...
if I mis-spoke, someone will comment soon but it looks great and if you have the sling and swivels you have a really quite rare set-up. it should also have a lyman 29 1/2 or 30 1/2 (not sure but someone will know)
a collector could go a long time looking for that model un in that condition... congrats!!

I got the removable sling hooks but no sling, does someone have a picture of the correct rear sight and where might I get one? Also what would be the proper tang sight for this model the 30 1/2?

Kind of a interesting RS with the north west Mounted Police marking on the barrel i assume the serial number is around the 290,000-300,000 range with that marking. Don

Thank you everyone for the information, its nice to know I finally got the deal you always here about but never seem to get. Yes it was that Craigslist San Diego listing. Serial number is 3436XX with a 24 inch barrel. Can someone please explain what designates this as an 'RS' and what is the 'north west Mounted Police marking'. I wish that book would get here!!

Wow... what a grab! Jealous here..
Originally it would have been sold without the rear sight (possibly with a Lyman folding sight in it's place), and it would have had a Lyman tang sight.

It had two regular screws in the receiver like it had a tang sight and someone removed the sight but put the sight screws back to fill the holes, I took those out and replaced them with flush mount screws I had in my extra screw box. Which Lyman sight? I have seen a couple of different tang sights some of these sights cost as much as the rifles!!!! What was in the dovetail on the barrel if there was no rear sight? OK I re read your post, one of those small folding leafs? I would like to bring this great old classic back to original.
