My grandfather told me that candy was dandy but liquor was quicker...
I'm sure this is resolved by now. If not, don't lie. If she can't deal with it he's better off without her.

IMHO if anyone gets tied up about a ring vs whats happened earlier, they should straighten out the priority, in fact I think rings should be simple silver or gold bands and nothing more. It's not about whats on the ring, or what it cost... its a reference to the real thing, the committment.
Also rings used in earlier marriages that were in the family are respected, and how that can differ any from what happened here is somewhat beyond me. IE grandmas ring is cool, but whoa be to you if you'd bought it for something that didn't work out.

My wife's ring was VERY inexpensive but she wore it with pride for over fifty years. "Till death do us part."
For many years she had the option of having any ring she wanted but the old cheapie was the best. A ring doesn't make the marriage.

A ring doesn't make the marriage. my wife has knuckles bigger than the rest of her finger so rings tend to spin.....she HATES any ring with a big stone sticking up cause it shreds the neighboring fingers.....she was VERY happy with the cheap ring with a few small channel set diamonds....ive got a $99 titanium band i nearly never wear.....i aint big on jewelry, i dont even wear a watch.....the wife dont care that it stays put away.....figures a ring on the finger aint going to make me any more faithful than i had given my word to be.....

had a double dose of deuce waiting for me downstairs when I got home this last weekend from burying grandma Bob, veins popped out, did some cussing as it was downstairs on the fairly new carpet and not upstairs on the Pergo crap that was meant for that.
somebody left the gate off the stairs, ai yi, yi. the things we get worked up over heh?
just get even Bob, get her drunk, show her the poster Steelhead referenced like you're hinting for Xmas ideas and do her right on the spot the dog did his deed.
freakin Steelhead he's such a romantic, amazes me he's escaped the marriage gig. Must be why he moves so much. that was a sweet sentiment on that poster Scott, brought a tear to my eye.
oh and Bob, you already read her my one post, maybe skip this one, don't want to overwhelm the dear girl with romantic overload. (grin)

Sounds like he in encountering the first of many "learning experiences" that come with marriage. And, of course, then there are the many "opportunities to excel" ...
Best wishes to he and his lady.

I got #1 wife her engagement ring on our 25 Wedding Anniversary! It's a chunk of Ruby set between some diamonds in White Gold. That's what she wanted. When we got married she did not want a ring. I obliger her by not getting her one. After 25 years I figured I'd get her one anyway.
As far as the dilemma goes, his first mistake (besides what may be obvious) was giving her the second hand ring. He should have given her her own ring. She's going to be a bit miffed about getting the reused ring and probably a bit more so than getting the fake. Fakes can be fixed, Associating her with "another woman" is, well they're jsut funny about those sorts of things.
Good luck. If she's the kind of gal that will have her engagement ring appraised (perhaps she thinks he may not be being honest with her, Silly girl!) then she might be understanding if he drops a chunk of change on a Brand New one that she picks out.

Been there done that....was engaged and bought some spendy stones and a setting. I called it off and wound up getting the ring back. A few years later I met the RIGHT ONE....showed her the original ring - she liked the stones but had issues with the ring being intended for someone else. Traded the setting in on another using the same stones (plus some more) that she picked out and all is well.
Of course the ring is worth more than everything in my gunsafe (including the safe) combined!!
