What does it mean when you have to get a diesel "flashed". How much does it cost? Is it inevitable on every diesel? Thanks Jared

It means getting the computer reprogrammed, and is done to address specific issues. There isn't just one flash, there are many different flashes to fix/upgrade many different things, like hw the speedo reads, how the tranny shifts, how the AC compressor cycles, how the truck idles, etc.

It is often done under warranty to correct a problem. If you are out of warranty, then it costs around $70 or so.
However, you don't just take your truck in for a reflash. The flash is just part of the corrective process, like replacing a bad sensor or a worn out part.
There are also aftermarket programmers that will flash or reprogram your ECM for a variety of things.
What is it exactly you are trying to fix with a flash?

Oh I don't have to get one flashed I am thinking about going diesel and was just doing research, in the process came across the term several times and was wondering what it was all about. From what I gathered it could change certain aspects for the worst like fuel mileage and the degree of noise in the engine, but I guess it was needed for other problems. Jared

Blaine- Nice pickup, but I am not a big gearhead - I drive a 01 2500 Chevy gasser and it ain't cuttin the mustard. I bet it would with your mods MTmisfit- Yeah I have heard about the Strokers having to be flashed more than the others. Kinda leanin towards the Dodge. Jared

You can't do those mods to a gasser and get the same power levels as you can from a diesel.
BTW, any of the big three diesel trucks are fine. Each has it's pros and cons.
Have you been to the diesel truck websites?

Yeah I know about the mods under hood I was talking about your lift . I'm not really concerned about the power I want longevity, and good gas mileage if I can get it and still have a full size Pickup w/ full 4 doors-though I have thought about a toyota tacoma I have checked out the diesel pages - lots to think about.
