Getting stuff together for the upcoming season, I need new socks and underwear, prefer merino wool. I've always been happy with other stuff from Filson but their prices for socks and underwear put me off. Recommendations?

Ain't nothing wrong with wool, its still gets the job done..but I like some of the new stuff out there thats warm and fuzzy.

REI makes some really nice merino wool socks. Terramar has decent lightweight merino wool underwear at a good price. Ibex and Icebreaker are always good. I've been told that Brynje is outstanding.

I just stocked up on smartwool at REI. Can't wait to try it out, but it is looking a tad warm for early elk. Can't stand the underarmour stuff anymore.

I like smartwool socks also, don't wear long under bottoms but love the Patagonia stuff up top.

Another Smartwool fan - top to bottom. Socks, bottoms, tops, and hat. Actually have more Icebreaker pieces but the Smartwool is my favorite.

They have PHDs! Actually all of the wool in SmartWool comes from New Zealand. Those Down Under sheep is bright.

My and my friends experience with merino products suggests that the Icebreaker stuff is more consistent and a bit more durable than Smartwool. I like them both, but my future purchases will lean towards Icebreaker stuff.
Empirical results rule!

Smartwool suits me best and it does last a while. I have smart wool socks that are years old.

The Smartwool I have used has been quite nice. I am becoming more impressed with fleese all the time. I hunted with some folks who wore Swazi fleese from NZ. It is incredble stuff. I am thinking about ordering some from their web site before my next high elevation hunt. I have some Bemidji Woolen Mills clothes I have used heavily since 1974.

Patagonia underwear, usually Capliene, and Dahlgren socks. My feet stay much drier and warmer than with any wool socks I've ever used. To the point where I don't need insulated boots and can use Gore-Tex lined boots in any weather.
I used wool for everything over the years. Quality wool. But the only thing I use it for any more are wool pants. Either Cabela's Whipcords or their heavy, washable, 24 oz. pants. E

Love the Smartwool socks. REI has some great offerings, as does BassPro Shops.
As for undies, I prefer the synthetics, polypro and such. I usually wear longies, but no top under my shirt as I wear a jacket.
Think direction first, then velocity.

E, I bought a pair of Cabelas WC's and wore them one day last Nov. Got soaked totally to the bone, it was like I was wearing a pair of flimsy cotton pants. (wet Nov snow and tall wet grass)
Seriously, do yours soak up H20 like mine or what?
I couldn't get back to my KOM pants fast enough.
