Shotgun butt? 22" bbl? Sounds like it might be an 1899A Short Rifle.

okay, thanks. Is there somewhere one could find this info on their own? I tried the search function, no luck. Also savage99.com doesn't seem like there's too much on the net. It's a shame for such a fine rifle not to have a better presence on the web.
Cheers, Tony

This site is the best reference to Savage 1895, 1899, & Savage 99 rifles that you find anywhere on the web...!!! Mike... [color:#33CC00]Click on Me...!!![/color]
All said, the Savage 99 is a genius of a rifle. Although no longer produced, it remains highly revered, as it was the foundation from which Arthur Savage built one of America's great gun companies. >> (Jon Y. Wolfe) <<

You're at the best net presence on the web. Ask any question and I am sure the answer is within this great group of savage collectors. Welcome to the fire, there are a fair number of us Canucks that collect savages on here.

I have to eat, so like most of the unemployed in the country I have headed off to Alberta. I have been working here since February.

That's too bad. I was just laid off too Sept 11. Don't know what I'm gonna do. Trying to look for a welding course since I'll be on UI. Looked into engraving but the new methods cost too much in tools. Me I learned by making my own engravers out of sewing needles and grinding them down by hand. I'll probably still do some engraving for fun. Find some rats and and shine 'em up.

That rifle would date to late April, 1902 or possibly early May. What's the barrel length on the rifle?

is the rotor really bronze?? Maybe brass?? We have seen bronze rotors before but brass should be the metal of the day for rotors...
Barrel length and style will basically answer the question...
round barrel or Octagon? Length?

http://www.hallowellco.com/schnabel_forend.htm http://www.shotgunworld.com/parts.htmlSCHNABEL FOREND - Erroneously also called shnobel or schnobel. A curved and sometimes carved shape at the forend that resembles the beak of a bird (Schnobel in German). This type of forend is common on Austrian and German guns; was popular in the U.S., but the popularity of the schnable forend comes and goes with the seasons. A schnabel forend is often seen on custom stocks and rifles.
