Going elk hunting in Durango area in October. Thinking of throwing my 5 wt in the truck and try some fishing if there is any nearby. Any recommendations? Thanks

Durango area is a LOT of country. Some with water some high and dry.
Animas right through town.

Where ya gonna be in relation to Durango and then folks can more likely help ya (or send you far away from their honey hole)

San Juan river in NM is about 45 minutes south of Durango and always fishing. Just go to a shop in Durango, get a map and walk right in to fish.

This past summer, I took my kids to the Animas River in Durango. They caught several 10-14 inch rainbows. They had a better time at Groundhog Lake a about 1.5 hours north of Durango. 16" or so was the average - for both cutthroats and rainbows. There was a lot of top water action!
