The letter: JTC's comments: Blair, Very nice rifle. I have not seen this pistol grip on any 1899 or 99 before. as you say the rifle was made in 1903. I went through my 1903 catalog and did not find anything on this grip being offered or anything for Lyman sight. The only connection that is a straw in the wind is that Savage came out with their Model 1903 pump .22 that year and it had this same style grip. Perhaps someone made it up for a sample to see how it looked on a 1899 since they were using it on the 1903. The fluted comb I thought unusual as well. JTCBlair

odd that JC says the fluted comb is unusual... I have two slightly upgraded guns around this era and both have fluted combs... I was under the impression that any gun with upgraded checkering got a fluted comb... I am still a novice and made this on personal assumption...
