Another comment on the ballistics of the "puny" .300 Savage:

The standard 150-grain load is supposed to achieve 2,700 f.p.s. As noted, this is identical to the orginal military loading of the .30-06. It is also identical to the .303 British, a cartridge which has had some experience in the game fields of the world.

How many Canadian deer, moose and bears have fallen to the old .303 British over the last century? Too many to count. Those who've used it will generally testify that the .303 British is no slouch as a general purpose hunting cartridge, and it has historically rivalled the .30-06 as the do-anything cartridge in Canada and Australia.

The one advantage the .300 Savage would have over the .303 British, however, is in choice of bullets. There are no Barnes or Nosler premium bullets for the .303, unlike for .30 cal. The use of, say, a 150-grain Barnes Triple Shock would transform the .300 Savage into an even more formidable hunting rig.

Couple a good handload with a strong, accurate bolt-action like the Remington and a moderately-powered scope, and you have the makings of a wonderful all-around rifle.

I have found that Reloder 15 is a very nice fit with 165's in the .300, just the right burning rate evidently to boost them to the maximum practical velocity in the .300 Savage. Right now I am getting 2600 with 165 Partitions. Not many manuals suggest R15 data in the .300; I believe I found mine in the Speer 13. Accuracy is great in my 99EG, and the bullet works on anything from pronghorn to elk.

Holy Moly MD:

2600 FPS with a 165 grain partition is a GREAT set up. Sell all you other rifles. You need nothing else. (yeah, like need was ever a consideration).

Seriously, if'n you can get that type of performance you are set.

So, wmwise, go buy the dang thing and let us live vicariously . . . . OK?

If you don't like the stock or the caliber, all of the parts for a 700 SA will fit the 722. I have a couple of 722s around, a 257 and a 257 rechambered to 25-284. After I saw a picture of Mule Deer's 257 installed in a 700 MR stock, I did the same to my 25-284. 700 stocks are really cheap on eBay and 700 BDL trigger guard assemblies are easy to come by, but not always for a good price.

When I was a kid, a local gunsmith had a 722 "B" with a 2-7x Redfield PCH that I lusted after. There has been, and may still be, a 722"B" on GunsAmerica for quite awhile, but I have too many firearms and can hide another from my wife.

As has been previously stated the 308 win is the military version of the 300 Savage. Military lenghtened the neck & decreased shoulder angle so it would work in Full Auto weapons. If the 308 had been first the 300 savage would probably be called the 308 short Ackley improved.
300 savage is to the 308 as the 308 is to 30/06. Difference between the two is on paper. If you shoot anything that can tell the difference you probably should have been praying, not shooting.
It is a great little deer cartridge. (my M99 likes sierra 165 gr. pushed by a load of imr-3031)

Mule Deer

Yes, the 165 grain Nosler Partition bullet appears to be, perhaps, THE best compromise weight bullet if a man wants to use one bullet/one load for deer & caribou and possibly larger game. At 2600 fps, it would still be an excellent 250 yard round for deer and caribou.

Dont you agree that this 165 grain Partition load should also be adequate for elk, moose and black bear out to say 150 yards with good bullet placement?

Ive never tried the 165 grain Nosler Partitions or Reloder 15 powder since I have a Model 70 Winchester Alaskan (26 barrel) in .338 Win. Magnum that I purchased new way back in 1961 (they only cost $149 back then) and used for everything I hunted from deer to moose all of my adult life until I retired it a few years ago. As a result, Ive never used the .300 Savage for anything larger than white-tail deer.

I now hunt only whitetail deer out of my bestest buddys cozy cabin that sits among the mountain laurel in the Moshannon State Forest in north-central Pennsylvania with my 1953 (a late model EG) Savage Model 99 in .300 Savage. Ive found that the 150 grain Nosler Ballistic Tip bullet is quite adequate for whitetails at the modest muzzle velocity produced by my handloads in the .300 Savage.

My .300 Savage handload consists of a MAXIMUM load (work up to it slowly) of 41.5 grains of IMR4895 behind a 150 grain Nosler Ballistic Tip bullet sparked by a Winchester standard large rifle primer in once-fired & accurized Winchester cartridge cases. This load does a very satisfactory job on whitetails with any reasonable bullet placement and yields an average chronographed muzzle velocity of 2680 fps out of my 99s 24-inch barrel. It gives consistent inch, 3-shot accuracy at 100 yards from the bench-rest. The point-blank-range of this load is 260 yards which is 10 yards further than the self-imposed range limit at which I feel comfortable in shooting at deer or any other game animal.
