Someone help a lady out!!! I drew a muley deer tag for unit 21 in Arizona. The hunt is from 11/5 to 11/14. I drew this with the understanding that an acquaintance who knew the area was going to help me. This source of information is no longer available. I am in the process of ordering forest service maps and contacting the area biologist for information. Due to employment changes I am unable to make any scouting trips, as originally planned. Any help from anyone who knows the area would be greatly appreciated! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" />
A lady hunter!! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif" alt="" /> Best be careful around all these sharks ... you may get hunting advice and a marriage proposal! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif" alt="" />
I'm not from AZ so cannot help you, but there is a great bunch of folks here that will if they can. Welcome to the campfire ... hope you stay a awhile. Congrats on your tag and hope you have a great hunt in Novemeber.
Ive killed some mule deer in that area a few years back. Hunt the mountain area just SE of Black Canyon City. You will have to take exit roads that will bring you back under the freeway under pass to get there. The exit will be about 5 miles before you get to BCC. The roads are rough and it will take some time to get in there.
Be nice guys, Nakona is a friend of mine and just married a good buddy ---- by the way, sorry I missed the wedding, was up in Oregon hooking up with su35 amongst others.
Any help you guys could throw her way would be appreciated!
Also Nakona, if you promise to pose with your buck while in a bikini and post the picture here, I'd bet you'd get ALL kinds of help <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />
How about this, I'll post a pic of my last archery hunt!!! We'll think about the bikini, if it is a trophy, maybe!! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif" alt="" />
How far out, surely not as far as Horseshoe or Bartlett Res.? Any specific area markers I should look for. Were you aware of water sources or were your hunts completely spot and stalk? Not that I am all about the trophy, but are there quality deer or is it a situation of see a buck, better shoot??
Nakona, Here's a link to Game & Fish's unit 21 hunt report. It seem fairly general. I have hunted 21 for archery javelina and deer a few times, but haven't seen any bruiser bucks. Tangle Creek and Red creek below the ranch has flowing water. Hot springs are down at Sheep Bridge on the Verde River below the mouth of Tangle Creek.
I shot him in North East Texas, ground stalk, a 23 yard shot quartered away, double lung. Shot a Painted Desert Ram from a tree stand that trip too! The trip was a blast and as always more fun with a bow!!! It's a great trip to get out of cold Colorado in the spring, except for the couple inches of snow we got!! In Texas! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />
Nakona, the desert mule deer in that area for some hunters may not be trophy material.
The best you may see will go between 22" and 25"
But, they match the Cows deer in wit and cunning. Get up high and glass the desert hillsides. As it gets towards the middle of the day you can look at a near barren hillside and think there's nothing there. Dont let that fool you, these desert deer will find a small 3' Palo Verde tree, while lying on the ground (the deer) will wrap its body around the trunk of the tree and stick its horns up in the branches. Spend the time glassing hillsides over and over again. As the sun changes
so do shadows and all of a sudden you will see a deer, you'll
be saying to yourself "where did they come from!"
Hope you have some good bino's and a long range rifle. You'll need it. It wouldnt hurt to bring something to sit on for long periods of time while you glass as well. Find the high places to glass from, make sure you get there discretly and dont profile yourself. Those deer will see you from at a 1000 yards and WILL spook. Use your bowhunting skills for the greater distance. Sneak and peek, just longer distances.
Water, believe it or not, is not a real factor while hunting the desert, at least I have never found it to be. You'll be hard pressed to even find any. Those animals know how to survive
on very little. It will be night when they are anywhere near it.
I would take any 3x4 horns in a heartbeat, You'll earn it.
It's pure hunting and horns come in second place here.
That's just my opinion.
The foothills just SE of Black Canyon City holds pockets of bucks.
Anywhere between 1 and 5 miles SE. of that small town.
The 1-17 exits before you get to Rock Springs from Phoenix take you in. You exit, go west then the dirt roads will circle around under the freeway and take you east to your hunting territory.
If you decide to hunt north or around Bartlett Lake you will run into a tremendous amount of hunters. I did this one year
and got so frustated by all the hunters I just started shooting coyotes that were being pushed around.
If your looking for better quality mulies in 21 get up into the ceders and pines,732 Rd [cherry rd] east off I17 10 miles south of campverde will take you back to Squaw peak 12 miles off the highway theres some nice mulies running arround in there, alot of deep canyons so you might have to do some packing, just south of there is is a small town called dugas,7 miles east of dugas is pine mountain some quality bucks in there, this year is going to be a good year for deer all the water tanks are full and everything has greened up in 21,good luck, and if you need more info you can pm or email me...mixer
Good luck and welcome to the fire. I'll ask around. Do you want to hire a guide? You should be advised that any affiliation with Muley Stalker will cause you to be a suspect individual around here. I would show you, but I just had breakfast. You will want to bring some glass.
WOW <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif" alt="" /> Great info!! Thank you! I do have good glasses, spotting glass, and spotter of a husband! I really am not horn hungry I will be thankful for anything. Thank you so much!! I may have more Q's soon when I get the maps organized!
