I would first decide what type of rifle I wanted. all around standard, mountain rifle, long range heavy barrel rifle, magnum elk/bear rifle. is it going to be a deer, elk or combo rifle. then decide what caliber fits the rifle. you don't want to end up with a 22" fwt in 264 wm (winchester made such a beast) it was just a loud 270. and you don't want a heavy beanfield gun in 257 wby for mountain hunting. i think a 280 would be cool but i also think that street rod 32-40 fords should run chevy engines. by the way you can get takeoff '06 fwt barrels for about 50-100$. I know the '06 is boring & plain but truth is its the cartridge which all others are compared to. do a search, theres some great factory fwts on here with synthetic stocks on them. good luck!

No, i have a complete gun, but someone added a brake to it. They didn't alter the front sight though. I just thought since condition is everything and this gun is prob at 85% at best w/o the brake having been installed, why not turn into a nice 7 pound or so hunting rifle.

i'm having barrels of fun with a 25-06 that i recently had made up...
the .270 is a "no brainer" as well...
if i didn't already have one, i'd consider the .300 win....

Long story, but I wound up with a 30-06 AI from Krieger.

Yip.

If you have the complete rifle and the barrel isn't shot out but has a brake I'd have somebody who knows what they're doing remove that hideous thing and keep it pristine, or as much so as it can be.

If it were blown out I'd find an FW take-off from years ago in '06 and call it good. You just can't have too many '06s, though one 270 is too many in my opinion.

I'd love to connect w/ a Pre-64 or even pre-WWII M70 action and have my one REAL custom built on it like Terry said... have a beautiful stock blank hand-worked to my specs, and have it chambered to the old Springfield cartridge and all decked out. Youza.

Thats kinda what I was thinking to do. I was wondering what exactly makes a pre 64 custom stock only fit a pre 64? I guess the question is will a post model 70 semi inlet stock fit once I rebarrel?

The short answer is no, the pre-64 M70 action is shorter than the post-64. You could make it fit with a lot of glass bedding, but you would REALLY need to want to do it.

My remaining pre 64, the one I spoke of that is now a 257WBY is wearing a Boyds JRS walnut laminate stock that I had re shaped a bit i.e. slimmer and more open grip area as well as checkered and stained in a dark walnut finish. Boyds will also sell this stock in regular walnut already inletted, checkered, finished and ready to rock and roll. IIRC, they can even upgrade the quality of the wood to one with some pretty figuring if you wanted to go this route. If your stock is a good clean original though, why not just run that one?

I wouldn't; but if I did, it'd be a 270 or 280 or 30-06.

I'd sell it and build what I want on a custom action/stock/trigger.

I would have to first think 30-06 for the nastalga of having the rifleman's rifle. Then I would of what I really want which is 280AI. Tough decision.

Whatever a 7x57 can do a 270 can do better.

I'd stay with the parent brass and rebarrel to the 6.5-06 or 338-06 depending on whether you're sliming down or bulking up.

6.5-, 30-, 338-06....everything else is a waste of brass.

Well I decided to clean the barrel after I ordered brass and dies. There is a small rust spot in the first part of the rifling. Oh well, hopefully it will group well enough to shoot something till I rebarrel.
