Anybody know anything about this case? It is a confusing name because the Taylor cartridges (.375 and .416) used the .338 win as the base. But I saw a gun with this chambering in a gunshop. They also had a fired case for it--it appears to be a .300 Win Mag necked up to .338. That would seem to put it under the .340 Wby in capacity.

it was stamped that way ? that almost seems irresponsible given that the taylors were indeed 338WM cases necked up (or 458 basic)

I ripped off the following from Cabellas, where they have one for sale.

The .338 Taylor will require handloading all your own ammo, unless you send the gun to Superior Ammo, and have them develop and load ammo for you. RCBS reloading dies and brass are included with the gun. The shell is a necked up .300 H&H magnum shell, shortened 1/4", and blown out, with a sharp shoulder, a la the Ackley Improved cartridges. It has more case capacity than the Winchester .338 Magnum, and is enough for any North American game.

Hope this helps.

Some people will go to great lengths to be "different" even if they aren't. "338 Taylor"... that's just weird.

Turns out that the link Rman provided was to the very rifle I was looking at--it was a really nice custom rifle for not much money.

If one was willing to put up with the chambering or have it rechambered.

I know nothing about this rifle or its chambering but actually the416 Taylor was the 458 necked down to accept 416 bullets with specific dimensions for neck and shoulder, length and diameter. It is approximately the 338 win necked up but the two case dimensions are not the same and to neck the original 416 Taylor down to 375 or 338 will give different neck length than the 338 win. Nothing significant, but I have the drawings for the 416 Taylor and had Dave Manson make a reamer for 416,375 and then a 358 to use the same headspace gages, never made a 338, kind of redundant with the fine 338 winny but the point is a Taylor dimension case is different from the 338 win case. The neck is slightly shorter than the 338 winny and H/S gages for Taylor won't go in a 338 win chamber. I believe Dr. Ken's book reflects this also.

that is a heck of a nice rifle, esp for $2750.

I wonder if a 340 reamer would clean that oddball chamber up?

Dean lives just a few miles from my house. I'll ask him about the rifle next time I see him.

I've a buddy who used the round a fair bit, burned thru a couple of barrels and went back to his 340. We jokingly called it the 339... smile

If I recall right it gave another 100 fps over the 338 and the cases were pretty to form (I think).

Easily enough to work with I'd say so if the rifle perks ones fancy I'd sure not back off on account of a different round.

Let us know if you do anything with it.

Seems to me that my friend used R19 in it.

I shot the .338 Chatfield-Taylor for a few years and it was one of the nicer calibers in wildcat pursuasion that I have ever used. the CT series of 338, 375 and 416 are all excellent wildcats and the 30-338 which is the same thing is an outstanding 30 caliber magnum....

My only issue with them today is we have the .338 Win. the 300 Win. the 416 and 375 Ruger and along comes a 300 and 338 Ruger all of which will kill the Taylor and a lot of other nice caliber I fear, and rightly so, the Ruger case is sure enough a case of the future as well it should be.
