Quick update here. Spoke with a double gun builder in Soldotna, and he explained French gray as being nothing more than color cased metal that then has the colors removed with acid(muritic-I'm sure the spellings wrong) and then neutralized( he said club soda works ). Seems simple enough. Like so many things in the gun trade, there are many ways to skin a cat.

Jeff I think skinned cat is one of the componets of the secret Flemish formula for stock finishing, but I could be mistaken <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

Can someone tell what French gray finish is, and how it is applied? I'm looking into it as a possible choice for an FN98 action(thanks for the idea, Karnis!) since I got the thumbs down on color casing it. I think a French gray receiver/rings/bottom metal, along with nitre blued screws and a rust blued barrel would look sharp.
Thanks,
Jeff just wondering why the thumbs down on color case hardening, if well done it would be very attractive. thanks, dave.

Thumbs down on color case due to risk of warpage(this according to Turnbull Restorations). In light of how french gray is done, I guess it's out as well. Unless one has it done chemically, which wouldn't be very durable.

I've had eabco french gray my encore and ruger security six. It looks better than a brushed stainless. I've hunted with the encore 3 seasons now in all kinds of weather and it still looks new. I'm sending him my marlin guide gun in .450 next.

Had my Marlin 94 done at eabco. I left the sights and barrel blue. Made quite a striking gun. I also tried a nail file on the finish under the forarm and couldn't mark it.

It's for the (few) custom gun freaks who are going to vote for Kerry.
